I had a penn Captiva it was not a favorite of mine. In my opinion any of the penns that are not manufactured in the USA are Crap, the captiva is not manufactured in the USA. Just my opinion, if your gonna get a penn pay the extra bucks for a Slammer or a SS series spinning reel.

I agree with tarpon tamer. I own several of the ss series and one live liner that work awesome. I have and owned a few of the previous penns, does anyone know the name of the silver spinning reels that were before the captiva lines? I own 2 of them and have had them forever and with a cleaning here and there (rare) they are still ticking. I think those are made in the U.S as they seem alot more durable than the captivas. Too bad they dont make those anymore, pretty cheap also. After lots of money and trial and error if your going to spend your money u might as well invest in a good reel. To answer your question any rod/reel will work in the surf as long as ur not going after JAWS. The question is how long do u want it to last? And unless u are using a Van Stahl reel even so it is always imperative u do your very best to keep your reel out of the sand or water!!!!! Anyone seen the Van Stahl reels? Those are bad Mo fo's!!!! if anyone cares its been on my x-mas list for years. My parents thought i was crazy when i told them i wanted one....it was pretty funny. One day, One day!
