The trout and redfish action in the Rockport area has been incredible over the last 3-4 days. Below are an account of the last few days with some pictures...
Thursday (6/12) - 3 person charter: I was pleased to have a group with a 6 year old boy and his parents. We had some solid trout action in the morning using live croaker. We were fishing over scattered shell in Aransas Bay. We ended up with 9 nice size keeper trout. In one area, we caught over 30 trout in about 45 minutes, but most of the trout were just barely undersize. The fast action kept the the 6 year old boy busy, as we made him fight several of the larger fish. He also got his first and biggest trout at 20". After fishing for trout, we tried some spots for redfish, but they would not cooperate... (1 picture below)
Friday (6/13) - 1 person charter: I welcomed James Pearson from Indiana for a hands-on sight-casting trip for big reds. We started our day on Estes Flats poling in some prime water for big reds. We were throwing S.S. Jr. topwaters and Norton soft plastics. After one hour, we had 20 keeper size trout with 3 over 25" caught on topwater (all released). Since the goal of the trip was to catch some tournament/trophy size redfish, we left the big trout biting and moved to some far back lakes in South Bay. We found the reds cruising in small sand pockets amongst the thick grass. Since the grass was so thick and laid over on the surface, the best lure that we found was a weedless rigged frog that would usually be used in bass fishing. We also caught several fish on a bone Super Spook Jr. We ended the day with over 20 keeper size trout, 6 slot size redfish, and 3 redfish over 28". Most of the fish were caught on topwaters in 6" to 12" of water. All fish were released for another fight. (1 picture below)
Saturday (6/14) - 2 person charter: I took 2 guys on a wadefishing trip for trout. We had 20 nice keeper trout by 10:00 AM. All of the fish were caught on red/white Norton Bull Minnows in 2-4' of water. We were fishing on the southern end of Aransas Bay over hard sand with scattered shell. (2 pictures below)
Saturday night (6/14) - I took some friends on a night wadefishing trip in southern Aransas Bay. We caught over 50 trout and 20 reds in a 3 hour period. Most of the fish were caught on red/white norton bull minnows. The fish were hitting the lures hard, and the moonlight made it easy to see all the action. Most of the trout were 16-19" and most of the reds were 19-26" (One picture below).
