| I took my whaler out 28.5 miles offshore 140ft deep yesterday and caught four 16-18 inch red snapper. I have never been way out their and wasnt sure what to do other than troll. The trolling was completely a waste of time. Their was another small boat a 15ft nissan with a 15 hp yamaha with two young teenagers out their!!! I watched a different boat next to us catch a nice cobia and a nice king. They were jigging this huge jig head with some bait on it around the rig. People were catching fish pretty well out their. Just not us. I asked the kids if they have seen any dolphin latley and they said last weekend they were out their catching 4 ft dolphin left and right. The trip in was very long and un eventful. If anyone is interested in going out there in their boat and wants another single engine to follow them i would be glad to on a calm weekend. |

It was beautiful out there. Glad to here you made it out. I think I know the rig you guys were fishing. We (Chuck3000 and some buddies) have done pretty well there catching Trigger with a double drop rig and squid. I try to keep it in the top of the water column to avoid catching the endangered snapper on almost every drop.
Using Cobia jigs is another great thing to do, especially now that it seems like they're around. We caught a couple cobia on small jigs yesterday. I also caught one on a large Pinfish. You can sight cast it to them or drop it midway down the water column. AJs will also hit it. There should be grouper on the rigs. Again a Pinfish on the bottom should work pretty well. You'll catch some snapper, but that's pretty much unavoidable, as far as i can tell. Butterfly jigs will also produce just about everything: grouper, snapper, almaco jacks, jack crevalle, blue runners, AJs, kings, cudas, etc.
If you want to catch kings while tied to the rig, I'd suggest putting a cigar minnow or something similar on a king rig and throwing it out the back. We caught one on Monday that way. You'll also catch some sharks and Chuck3000 caught two snapper once.
That's cool to hear there are dolphin around. We saw one weed patch/weak line on the ride in yesterday and threw at it. Saw a couple interested chicken dolphin, but no takers. How far out are the dolphin around here?
And the thought of a 15 ft. boat with a 15 hp motor that far out scares the s#$t out of me. I hope they don't die. |

| Thanks for the info. I will try some of those things you said. The kid told me he found a nice patch of weeds and started throwing yozuris and caught them up. I didnt inquire any more. So you saw some chicken dolphin! I have only caught one dolphin out here and that was at the 8 mile rig last year in 60ft of water. So i imagine they are everywhere when the time is right. I am from FT lauderdale and used to catch em up 1 mile out! Just trying to get the hang of the offshore fishing here, it is similar to florida but i havent had a bunch of luck. |

In case you didn't know.
Its against the law to possess snapper outside 9 nautical miles (Natural Resource Boundary) from August 6th to May 31st.
And the limit is only 2 per person. _________________ I am a pirate 200 years too late.

snapper if i am still in corpus area in a few weeks you can follow me out to the fishing grounds, just send a PM. Otherwise you should take some poor soul like jp3 that knows how to fish (kind of) but doesn't have a boat. _________________ CHUCK
