Still learning a lot about offshore fisihng.

One of my goals this year is to improve my odds for tuna. At this point, I will settle for black or yellow.

I need some help here:

Besides the shrimp boats culling, is there a method or approach to take for locating these fish, or is it a matter of showing up to some rocks or rigs, chum a little, and hope for the best?

Do electronics help in this matter? If so, will the screen be filled with fish, or something other?

Or anything else you can help with for locating and catching.

Thanks!!

Black fin are pretty easy around shrimp boats in the summer and Yellow fin , well , go deep and go far , they are normally caught around the very deep rigs ... Shoot Oz a PM , he's caught a couple in his time Very Happy

There is a rig called boomvang that is loaded with blackfin. Go to Venice Louisiana and catchem maybe 10 miles from the jetties.

Blackfin- Shrimp boats, rocks, & chum!

YF- Deep water! Boomvang, Nanson, Hoover Diana all hold good amounts of YF Tuna & BF Tuna. Flying fish (if you can catch them) are YF crack! As are chopped up BF.... Topwaters work well when they are on the surface and thick.

Any semi-sub drilling rigs in deepwater or drill ships will also hold tuna, not to mention all other sorts of palagics!!!

Good luck!

What is the best method to catch blackfin behind shrimp boats - chunks? How do you tell from a distance when they are dumping their nets, and how close is too close?

Behind shrimp boats for blackfin, your best bet is to troll smaller lures, like Islanders, squid imitations or cedar plugs. I don't think we've caught any blackfin shallower than 180-200 feet (Baker rigs, Southern etc.), so don't bother unless you are 30+ miles offshore (unless seeking kings, etc.)

Your best bet for yellowfin is fishing at night at Boomvang, Nancen, Hoover Diana or Gunnison. These rigs are in 5000+ feet of water. You can use chunk baits (cut up blackfin) or live flying fish (so bring a castnet). Catching them on topwaters is one of the coolest things on earth, but it can be hit or miss. Deep Sea Headquarters has some great overnight trips that are reasonably priced ($550 per person or so).

Here are some of our trips to the floaters catching tuna (from Oz's board):

Those are amazing reports... I would love to go fishing when catching Blackfin wasn't a big deal. Good work!
