Went down to the island with my wife and a friend and his fiancé. Finally got there late Friday and checked out our night time hot spots. The wind was probably around 20 and very cool out of the north. We didn't see anything promising and decided to hit the sack and get up early.
The wind picked up even more over night and was now somewhere in the 30s and still cool. After surveying the situation, we thought if we could get around the south jetty we could find some protection. We were in a 24' Outback and had to turn around after venturing past the protection of the north jetty - it was crazy out there, white wash coming over the top of the north jetty. We considered a point in the channel then decided the Fina docks were a close sanctuary. The current was ripping in so we tied up to the structure and worked lemon rigs baited with live shrimp down the bulkhead. This plan paid off as we boxed two nice mangrove snapper, a sheep's head, two nice 20 & 21' trout and one red. Called it a day around 1 and headed in to rig up for the jetty.
We hit the south jetty around 7 with plenty light to make down to our spot. Right off the bat I hook up with a nice 24" trout, then Dusty hooks up with another nice trout. With barely any light left I hook up with an awesome 28" trout, didn't have a scale, but she was every bit of 7lbs.
(recognize my wife in the pic?)
Went on to catch two more. We left with 5 trout ranging from 22-28"
Sunday we woke to absolute calm. With the calm water we headed to the jetties. I was really hoping to see bait getting blown up, so that I could put my new TFO fly rod to use, but it was fairly dead. We jetted out to a shrimper with a ton of birds around it thinking there may be something going on and that didn't pan out. We then ran to Hog island and used the trolling motor to work sand pockets searching for reds - we finally hooked one before getting a call that a buddy was hammering the reds off the south jetty. So we headed back, but our buddy had limited out and had moved on for trout. There was already another boat that moved into his spot and they weren't catching anything. We anchored to give it a shot and Dusty's fiancé hooked up with a nice pomp. Saw a couple huge smacks busting mullet but nothing consistent. We called it day around 1 and headed to the hacienda...
Forgot to mention the green water was rolling down the channel. By the time we were leaving it was well past the crab man _________________ Posted by

Nice Trout.
I guess there is some sense to all of this "Planter's Moon" Non sense..
I hear you catch the biggest trout near the Planter's Moon.
Oh and haven't I seen your wife on the cover of a Gulf Coast Connections Mag? _________________ I am a pirate 200 years too late.

My guess is your wife/fiancee IS the woman on this month's GCC.
If so, you 2 must have gotten married in a hurry!
Congrats! |

Yea that's her - my cover girl. And yes we actually went down to Panama and got married around the same time the magazine came out. We had talked about it - I had just not officially proposed yet. There should be an update to the story in the next issue - maybe - we're still working on it. _________________ Posted by

Did you teach a Bio 111 tutoring class for A-Plus last semester? You look really familiar. |
