Most of the redfish I catch in the Laguna Madre that are around 25 inches usualy weigh between 6-8 lbs, I usualy don't fish the bay or gulf so can't help you there. _________________ Fish like there's no tomorrow. |

While larger reds tend to be more offshore/surf oriented there are big ones in the bays. As for a 25" fish weighing more or less b/c of where it lives.........not sure there's any correlation. I would think it would have more to do w/ food availability and competition for that food rather than which water body they're found in. I've caught 28" bay fish that weighed 10-12 lbs and 28" surf fish that weren't even close. In my opinion, there's probably no correlation btwn size and water body _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

I'd have to agree with TD on this one. I caught waht I consider to be a HUGE red from the packery jetties and it only weighed 18.5 lbs. I've seen a 35 incher in the bay that only weighed 12. I had previously thought that once they got real big, you'd be looking at a pound per inch, but I was WRONG. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

| Me too on the TDog statement. I have seen skinny reds in both the bays and surf and fat in both environments. The reds I like to catch are those with the big fat head and shoulders that look almost like Big Black Drum. |

That red my buddy caught and tagged was only 33 inches but it went a whopping 16lbs. It was really fat and had really nice thick fillets. I would have figured 14 lbs. The rest were 7-12lbs average. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

It is all dependant on the environment of the fish and availability of bait as well as type of bait that is present. The big difference you will notice is the difference between freshwater and saltwater reds. Freshwater reds on average tend to be much fatter and I think it is because of the bait selection as well as the feeding activities of redfish in the river or close to freshwater flows. shad and minnows and crawdads and perch seem to be much higher in fat . and are easier to catch. I have been catching black bass in the river close to the bay when all of a sudden I hook a 10 pound 28 inch redfish. I hope this helps.
