An explaination from the Breakaway site and awsome pics of the bloom at night, which is biolumenescent:
Saturday there was a bloom of the dinoflagellate (noctiluca scintillins) in the 30s and 40s ((I first noticed it at mi 35.7, but climbed a dune and could see it stretching way up the beach).

The first time I saw this was in the mid to late 70s
I was a junior in high school and was on the beach at night with my date.
It was amazing to see. |
