My boy caught this at the jetties. Everywhere I've looked tells me it's a grouper, but a grouper at the jetties? and if so what kind? We weren't even close to being near the end of the jetties and he was free-lining shrimp throwing towards the rocks.

I can't find my fish ID book right now, but it looks like a grouper. I caught a couple of juvenile gag grouper in the Port A ferry channel in 2002, so I know they hang out around there. Were you referring to the Port A jetties?

That may be a Gag Grouper. Apparently Texas does not have a limit on grouper, except for the Goliath Grouper. Very Happy

Indeed it is a grouper. Possible juvenile gag...They like to hang around structure like jetties and platforms.

That is a very fortunate catch for the jetties , thanks for sharing , thats also a very good pic , send it in to TSFM , that would make for a great picture in a magazine that the kiddo would love to have later ...

We catch these guys fairly often at Pt. Mansfield in the East Cut and along the Jetties. First time I caught one the guy at the bait shop said it was a Grouper and that's what we have always called them. Great eating fish.

That fish is legal. It was caught in state waters. We usually catch 1 every other trip in POC at the jetties there.
