Fished all of those areas for years before I owned my first boat, fed myself through college catching Reds out of the Boat Hole and Packery. If I had to pick one lure to fish those areas it would be a 3/8 oz. Les Davis Hotrod spoon in silver. The "Wobbler" tears em up in those areas and you can cover tons of water. Kept me fed for several years! _________________ Later,

I agree. The hotrod is an awesome spoon in either gold or silver. Another good choice would be the Berkley gulp shrimp in new penny under a mauler. That will get the reds, trout, flounder , and almost anything else swimming in the area. I always had my best luck between the highlines and the old pier. Drift back as far as you can. My biggest fish were always holding close to the shoreline. Good luck. I am heading to flour bluff this weekend with my 3 year old son and 6 year old daughter. Going to anchor up and see what swims by. Hopefully get into some black drum. As long as they catch fish they will stay interested. |

The key in the Lagoon now is finding "green" water, thats where your nicer fish are being caught. If you have to fish close use bait or lures under a mauler to make some noise. Otherwise launch at Bird-Island & head south for clearer waters. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

Good to see you get back into it:
There is a huge selection of lures now days, but I think there are only a handfull that will get you threw most situations.
1. Gold Spoon: I like a 1/4 oz. weedless, I think it is the most versitle you can fish it slow in deepwater or fast in skinny water and the weedless will keep your from getting fustrated.
2. Norton Sand Eel: Sure there are 26 million colors and two sizes but I will give you my opinion. I have never herd a fisherman say that they had to upsize baits, for this reason I use the JR. version. When the fish are picky the smaller version will get you hit more. As for colors : Plum/Chart, Pumkin/Chart, Red/ White, Morning Glory. You can cover reds, trout, flounder, murky, green, blue, and gin clear with these 4.
3. Texas Rd Killer: sames colors as the sand eel.
Of course there are many more baits that are just as deadly but just to narrow it down a bit, these are my go to baits. I think most would agree, got to have these! |

That is the lure right there. Gold or silver.
I had good luck last weekend fishing the ICW close to Kate's, packery, right across from Snoopy's and farther down the ICW to about 49. I caught everything, mostly small, but I kept a few nice keepers. We caught Golden Croaker, Pinfish, Specs, Sand Trout, Reds, Drum, Hardheads, small rays, Shad?, ladyfish, and some huge flounder. I normally fish only artificails but this last weekend I took the wife and used the Matagorda Mauler setup. A soft plastic with a hook about 18"'s above tipped with a live shrimp. It worked well and the larger fish always were on the soft plastic. White pearl seemed to be the best.
The water north of JFK looked great but there were to many ladyfish. Oh.... and I have learned one other important thing. The weathermen in Corpus have no clue. |

I picked up a bone colored one and i've fished top waters probably once or twice before, do reds hit them or just trout mainly? Also what depth of water it the best for top waters ? I've heard of "walking the dog" with a top water, can someone give me some advice on how to work a top water.
Thanks again for everyone helping me out i really appreciate it! _________________ My Pictures - http://flickr.com/photos/jerrodmills/sets/ |

Thats what made DWD (dead wrong dale) famous. I watch the weather channel local forecast to get more acurate report. Thier unbiased to this area & dont need you to "tune in at 10 for updated version" _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

| bone is a good one, last trip red head white body produced 3 reds and 5 trout...I have caught more trout but that is what I usually am trying to catch. I have found out that the reds love them just as much. I have watched some very good fisherman use every different retrieve possible I think with topwaters. "Walking the Dog" seems to be the passe term of the last couple of years. Making the lure work from right to left and erratic seems to be the most effective way I have noticed in trying to learn how to trigger a strike. Sight casting in a foot of water for any fish is exciting. Good luck to you. |

I never learned to walk the dog "the right way" so I just twitch and pop my nirro-lures, and they work great. The white with red head one is a killer.
For deeper water, I like 1/4 oz white jig heads and rootbeer or red glitter bass assassins, with the paddle tails.
Don't forget the old standbys, johnson sprite spoons in your favorite weight. Take a gold and a silver one with you. Make sure you tie on a swivel clip first, and don't undersize it. Use at least the 3-0 size, or you'll be sorry when a big fish pulls the snap open. _________________ GOBZA!!!

| I solved that clip problem by using a barrel swivel but, Big John is right on about not using too small of either, the clip advantage is quicker on changing lures and if you are using leader material you are not cutting it everytime you change lures. |
