Sunday and Monday, one of my neighbors hammered the big Reds. They released more over-slots than they caught slots both days.
This morning, I went to the same spot about 8 AM, with a pint of live shrimp. I hooked oysters and/or rocks for a while. Finally, I hooked up to a 27.5 inch Red. Cool! I put it in my catch bag. Later, I caught a 28. Bagged it. I started catching over-slot Reds. They broke my 15# mono leaders. I switched to a bait caster with 20# mono. Broke off a lot. I finally caught a 30-inch Red, but he broke my Falcon rod, getting him(or her) in the boat. I caught a 25 inch for the bag, then caught over-slot Red after over-slot Red. I caught one more 28 that swallowed the hook, and I called some folks nearby , and they took it, as it would probably have died after release. Day's total: 3 slots. 3-29" and 4-30" Reds released! Best day I've had in ten years of fishing the Coastal Bend.
FYI, I was fishing a spoil island in the ICW just south of Cove Harbor. This area was dredged about four months ago, and I figured the catching would be over for six months. Fooled me.
Terrific Tuesday for me. Long time coming! TexasJim
