Tried to go on this trip at the end of Oct. with my 2 sons, but bad weather cancelled it. Re-tried at the end of Nov. with one son who could still fit it into his schedule, but bad weather again cancelled it. The third time was the charm at the end of Dec., unfortunately the schedule didn't work for either of my sons so had to go solo.
We had 16 customers on the boat, the weather web said it was supposed to be 3-4 footers all Sat moving to 4-5 late Sat night - was 4-5 going out, and changed to 5-6 all night at the rigs, but it was manageable. Since we were in the extended snapper season, we stopped around 2 hrs into the trip and then on the way in as well and caught some pretty large snapper:
Once we got to the rigs, I started casting halcos and occasionally a popper at 7:30pm, and except to either reset the drift or move to a nearby rig/drill ship didn't stop casting until 6am. Needless to say, I was exhausted at the end of that. We caught more blackfin than I thought possible - those things loved the halcos, I must have landed over 40 blackfin throughout the night, letting a bunch go as towards the end of the night the fish boxes on the boat were full. As a boat, we only landed 7 yellowfin the entire night, one was in the 60lb range, the others were all in the 25-40lb range. I got one YF in the 25lb range and was thankful to get it. Ended up keeping 10 blackfin tuna and the one yellowfin. A sampling of the blackfin with the yellowfin:
Always like looking at what's in the stomachs of fish, this was in the YF stomach:
All in all, a great trip, and am restocked on tuna for a while. Have already enjoyed some sashimi, as well as some ceviche:
Here's a pic of the entire boat haul, there were 4 nice Mahi caught in addition to the tuna and snapper.
Can't wait to do it again, hopefully with my sons along!
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and are having a very happy New Year. |
