I ventured out after work on Friday, thinking that low tide would allow lots of visible fish. Well sometimes it's just tough conditions and fish aren't moving much. In 10.5 miles of paddling I found a lot of good looking water, and there was no other traffic around so I enjoyed quietly searching for redfish. Coming through one connecting drain I turned a corner and noticed a red submerged and chilling ten feet away. I dragged the bait in front of him and he slammed it. At 21 inches I would usually give the fish a pass, but I was realizing that fish might be difficult to catch so into the box he went. It was another several miles before I found another fish that would respond to the bait. This one went 23" and joined his buddy in the box. I had five other shots at redfish (one was a big fish that was probably over the slot), but it wasn't my day and these fish rejected the offer. I did troll paddle tails over some shell structure before landing the kayak, and came up with nine small trout and a solid gafftop. I was happy to have a couple of decent fish aboard, and I was okay with giving Saturday to the duck guys.
