My old reels are still full of mono. My wife and I are retired and are moving back to Corpus soon from the hill country so it's time to get busy fishing again. Watching fishing shows on tv they all talk about braid for everything. What is the concensus on this forum about that. Is braid really better? Doesn't it get frayed in the rocks at the jetties or on oyster reefs? |

I use braid on all my reels now. You can feel the fish burp on your bait it is so much more sensitive than mono. And I found it lasts a long time. I do tip the braid off with fluorocarbon |

Same here. I use about 10' of 20# fluorocarbon on 30# braid.
I just use a Crazy Alberto on my inshore rigs but an FG for offshore. To connect the fluoro to braid. |

I fish the shallows and oyster areas a lot, and braid is the better answer for the main line. You can pack more line onto a small reel, and with a 2-2.5' leader of flouro you can resist oysters and other potential cutoffs pretty well. |

Thanks for the info. One more question. Is there a particular brand of braid line and flourocarbon leader you guys use? |

I tried a number of different ones and I'm partial to FINS windtamer. I think it has a little more flexibility than the power pro or some of the others. Although those are good too. Another thing I like about braid is that is doesn't stretch like mono does and once you feel a little bite the hook set is almost immediate. So much so that you can wind up catching little guys like this.

Depends what I am doing and the braid. Will not use powerpro or suffix 832 for trolling or surf fishing due to the knots up issue. Will use fireline for both and have been using the Yo-Zuri braid since its cheaper. Have had no issues, other than fading. Use it both in the surf or trolling. If you are fishing for trout/reds, all are good. There are a bunch at Amazon never tried. |
