Saturday morning the wind was out of the North again with the latest front, and I picked an area that would give some protected shorelines. As I worked along early in the morning I noticed a big wake out in the deeper water. I assumed it was a dolphin chasing something, so with mild interest I kept an eye on the disturbance. For seconds the giant wake changed directions to chase its prey, but there was no blowing on the surface. Finally it caught the food item and rolled on the surface. It was the largest bull shark I have ever seen, and was way, way over 8 feet (the expected size of a dolphin that never materialized). I stayed closer to the shoreline and was more vigilant when I would release fish beside the kayak. I continued down the shoreline catching a few fish but action was mostly slow. I remembered a lake way back in the ranchland that was a pretty long paddle down a narrow twisting passage, but it would offer a long shoreline of protected water so I headed back that way. In the channel on the way, I jumped three groups of redfish. One group would not give me the time of day, but fish from the other two groups smashed the lure. Unfortunately it was one of those mornings when luck was not always on my side, and both of these fish managed to spit the hooks during the fight.
When I finally got to the lake, it was about 40 acres of six inch deep water. At first it seemed empty, but I've played this game before and kept moving to take a detailed look. Farther down the protected shore I spotted a pair of white cattle birds looking intently at the water. I moved more quickly to close the distance and could then make out half a dozen large reds feeding. I closed the distance more and waited for a smaller fish to show. I found what appeared to be the baby of the bunch and tossed him a bait. It got his attention, and he smashed the bait as drag began to rip off the reel. After several runs, I got the fish to the boat and broke out the measuring board. Twenty seven and 9/10ths. Perfect! The others were still marauding several yards down, so I pushed through the mud to close in again. The next fish to hit was a fat bull, and I knew ahead of time this would just be good exercise and a release, but we danced for several minutes before he allowed me to get a photo. I moved on and 30 yards down I saw another group coming my way from open water. It took three casts to get the attention of one of the fish, but the one who bit was a lovely 27" fish and he rode in the bag with his larger cousin. I continued along the edge and then cut across the middle of the lake because a gull was hovering low over the water out there in the middle. As I closed in, a bunch of tails and backs became visible. I picked up the rod that had a heavier 1/8 ounce head and lobbed it out towards the fish. I think my fish was watching it come and waited with an open mouth. I didn't even see the bait splash down before there was an explosion of foam and the drag began to run off the reel. This one was over 30" as well, and I happily sent it on its way and began to search for the remaining slot in the fish bag. I found another group moving in the open water, and after cutting off their direction of travel I was able to toss a bait ahead of them as they closed the distance. Boom! This fish was a bit over 27 and made a nice third fish for the limit.
I remembered I wanted to get to the airshow after lunch, so I left the other feeding schools and began the long slog back to the truck. I finished the morning with 8 trout, nine reds and a nice gafftop. After three hours of waiting in traffic I got to the base just as the Blue Angels lifted off and got a few decent shots before the lovely 2 hour wait in traffic to get back home. Saturdays can be more tiring than work days!

We took the boat out to the end of the runway outside the Marina and watched the show while fishing.
Great view, not so many fish due to the noise. First time I wore earplugs while fishing. |

My son and grandson were sitting out there fishing and watching as well. Along with at least a hundred other boats he said. |
