Went out this morning before the rains. The winds and water were a lot rougher than what I thought it was. Stayed close to home again and first couple of drifts I got four almost trout and one almost red. Almost because they were all about a half inch shy of regulation. On my last drift coming home I wound up getting 2 keeper reds and a 17 inch trout. But I also had a problem. I tried cranking my engine to head home and I hear a clang and then just nothing but a humming noise when I turn the key. Fortunately I was within casting distance of my canal and my neighbor Tony came out and towed me back in. After getting home my son came over to drop off some stuff for me and we checked the motor and it turned out the spindle inside the starter broke. So all I did was spin and not engage the flywheel. Looks like it won't be fishing for a little while.

The spindle? Or sprocket? Either way you can take it to CC Battery on Agnes and be back on the water soon. If it's the sprocket you can change that out.

Sounds to me like the solenoid on the side of the starter motor has either failed or there isn't enough voltage to kick the solenoid gear into the flywheel adequately.
If the actual gear on the solenoid is OK, check your connections for adequate power.
Ive had this happen before with simply a loose or corroded negative battery cable or a low battery.
if the solenoid is actually broken, wholesale marine has a large selection of OEM parts.
Replacing the solenoid is usually pretty simple but I don't know your motor.

We took it apart and the rod inside that holds the gear is broken

Spindle

CC Battery should still be able to help you. They have re-done starters there. I've bought them for my old Mercs.

I took it there and he wasn't sure he said if you leave it here I might be able to find some old one in the back to replace so I didn't feel comfortable. Ordered one online for $55. CC battery wanted $160. Waypoint wanted $270 for the same thing.

My son came over this morning and we put the starter on and no problems. It was nice spending only $55 instead of $260. Went out and ran it and fished a little bit and fishing was slow this morning. The only keeper that we got was this one nice red.
At one point though we got real excited for a while. The two of us had a double hook up and lines were stripping and at the same time 2 skipjacks over 20 inches jumped out of the water and start doing their dance.

Cool, coach! And they wonder why their "Stealership"'s go out of business. Jeez! We'd all like to buy local, if it wasn't so painful. TexasJim
