Well, it's that time of year when I transition from fishing for stuff to shooting stuff, so I dug out the logbook to see how I did this year and some things stood out.

I fished for 82 days, from March 1st to this week.

I've pretty much quadrupled the number of trout caught. Unfortunately, very few of them were legal. Redfish numbers stayed about the same. I did not catch a single Flounder or Spanish Mackerel.

Offshore, Kingfish numbers were 1/3rd of last year and no Ling at all. Red Snapper was doubled. I was skunked on three trips out of Packery. That has never happened before. None of the offshore trips were what I would call productive. It's such a dismal showing that I'm thinking that I really don't need an offshore boat any more and I may move to something like a smaller Kenner bay boat just to save on gas and boat storage fees.

The Spanish Macs kind of puzzle me. I ALWAYS catch them. Offshore or from the jetties. It's like they took a vacation.

The most productive inshore spot was far and away, Deadman's Hole. (Trout again) Most productive lure was Johnson spoons.

Thanks John,
That's very valuable info for me.
We've had a lot of personal things keeping us off the water, but our numbers all the way around are way down..
To the point I go look and others are catching in the spots I was in a couple of days ago.
Feel like I'm just not choosing the right spots for the particular day

For me this is the beginning of my season, I can't handle the summer heat anymore.
Always catch and enjoy the fall until it gets actually cold cold..

" I can't handle the summer heat anymore. " This is all the more reason I say I like my fishing room air conditioned! All the reason to appreciate when the temps drop.

I kayak offshore and had good Spanish numbers (33 this season), but powerboats around me could hardly catch them. I think the motor noise was pushing them deeper - When I would get 200 yards from the boats I would start catching them again. Spanish didn't used to behave that way but that's what I am seeing lately. Kings were hard to find with only eight coming to the boat. I used to catch more than 50 per season. Managed one cobia that was a big one, and only three jacks. Kayaking offshore between BHP and Port Aransas has been slow for several years and getting slower, except for the Spanish macks.

Interesting, so it's just not me. Very Happy I don't count them or sharks in the tally, but I had very good Jack action this year off the Port A north jetty. Mostly while trying to score a tarpon. (which I STILL have not done in Texas .)
