It has been a bit since I posted. Not from lack of fishing but just busy in general. Also, just catching the normal run of the mill trout, reds, drum, sharks so nothing major to post. .. . Until today. . .

Took the day off for my birthday and headed downs PINS Thursday night. Ran a pomp out right before dark let it sit overnight with no takers. Set up camp and cooked up a nice meal for the family. Got a horrible nights sleep thanks to it being my 4 year olds first time tent camping. Learned a few things Very Happy. Started fishing at first light where my buddy got his PB trout at about 24 inches.

Got some shade set up at sunrise so the family could hang out while I fished. Looks like the shade canopy divided the sky.

I caught a large skipjack a little later. Chunked him in half and ran out the second bait.

It was pretty slow really. Hours went by with nothing. Bait was hard to come by but eventually this guy picked up my bait.

Once released I promptly ran the other half of the skip jack out. I saw what looked to be a giant slick out past the third bar. When I got to it there were small fish flickering at the surface. I thought it was a good sign so I dropped the bait. By the time I got back to the beach the reel had already had three screaming runs. I climbed up and came tight and saw what I thought was about a five foot shark go airborne as they sometimes do. I handed the rod off so my family could take turns reeling in this fish.

Even my little man got to try.

When it got closer I went out to leader it, still thinking it was a shark. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. I ran back to the beach and took back control of the fight. Here is what was at the end of my line. 84.25 inch monster of a tarpon. My first, and PB fish of a lifetime. Don’t get much cooler than that.

Took some pics, a video or two, walked the beast out to the second bar watched it appear to take a gulp of air and disappear back into the gulf. So freaking cool. I stopped fishing after that. Just packed up my stuff and went home. Didn’t want to chance ruining anything. What a great birthday gift!

Wow! Trip and catches of a lifetime! When I was about 21, I went offshore from Acapulco and caught a sailfish, 8'10", which was a near-record Pacific fish, then. Fifty-eight years later, I still remember and relish that day. But, your Tarpon is a bigger deal by far. Congrats. TexasJim

It jumped but initially was too far out to know what it was. Was really catching just a few glimpses of it. Then when it jumped closer in i looked up only to see the splashes never really seeing the fish. My buddy with me did mention it was a weird looking shark after one of the jumps haha Embarassed
