Saturday morning the wind was calm, but the fish weren't cooperating. The few reds I saw were not eating in the shallows... I finally convinced a lower slot fish to eat a bait, but it wasn't the kind of action desired so I backed out to the bay and paddled through the drainage towards the bay's slightly deeper grass flats. On the way I spotted a few redfish tails coming my way, and I made several casts right in front of them that didn't get attention. Finally I casted and the line came tight. It wasn't a redfish, it was a cow nosed ray. I fought him to the shoreline and used the net to cover his tail and stinger so I could unhook the ray and get him back into the water. In the bay a couple of schools were working bait and creating wakes in the shallow grassy area and it gave them away. Several kayak fishermen were hanging around but nobody seemed to notice the signs but these guys were hungry and I went over to feed them. As my lure landed just ahead of the wakes made by the first school, the water exploded in foam and the noise got all the other anglers looking in my direction. As soon as that fish was in the bag, a follow up cast to another wake resulted in another good fish hooked. This one also created quite a noisy show, and a few kayaks began moving in. With two good fish in the bag I moved off to look for others feeding. It didn't take long to find more fish swirling at bait. The first cast there got a strike, and a pully drum came to the boat. I continued to look for more fish, but kept moving toward the truck because other kayaks were now aware of the feeding fish and wanted to get in on the action. It was a great morning, but I was back at the truck by 9:15 and headed for home and other projects soon after that.
