Friday I took the video camera and stalked fish in 3=4" of water. Here are a few of the fish that came aboard:

Saturday morning rain was forecast, but lightning wasn't showing until afternoon so I returned to play some more. The low tide wasn't as low, and my flat was covered in 6-8" of water which can make finding my targets difficult from a sitting position on the kayak. I spent a while approaching a 26" fish that was crawling along like a neon sign, and after catching that fish it began to rain. I wasn't sure if the fish would continue to hunt in the rain or not, but to my surprise it seemed to bring on a more active bite. I left the shorelines and headed towards the middle of the lake where lots of gray herons were wading. Many were walking along watching the water, and I knew that they were shadowing redfish. What followed was two hours of madness that was near the top of my list for flats trips. Big individual fish were hunting, with just enough backs visible to make it fun. The rain provided enough cover sounds to help me sneak in close and that was enough to provide constant action. By 9:30 I had caught 19 reds and five drum with every fish sighted, stalked and hooked. On the way back to the truck I stopped at a drain where water was rushing back onto the flat. I saw a trout busting shad near one corner, and a careful cast of the Z-man paddle tail gave me a small trout for three species landed. I didn't see another soul on the water until I was approaching the truck. What a glorious morning!
