The alarm went off at 4:30 and I headed towards a local mud flat. Surf was a bit too high for a solo trip, so this would be my plan. Very early I saw a fish hunting near a drain and he smashed the lure as it came past his nose. I made my way to the larger lake and spent the morning sneaking up on the constantly exposed backs near the drains. Reds and drum were mixed together, and both were hungry. There weren’t a lot of big fish, but there were lots of slots willing to play, and I just kept picking away through the morning. By 9:30 I was ready to clean fish and then head home and do some chores. It was a nice way to start the day.
