I launched at 5:30 this morning to put in a few miles before work and hopefully catch a few fish. A pair of thunderstorms loomed in the dark sky over the gulf and put on a light show before sunrise. I launched and hurried to the fishy area, trusting that they would steer around me ...and watching them closely to be sure I didn't need to run back to the truck. The storms split and worked wide of my area, so I got busy looking for fish. After five lower slots I decided to leave the convenient but crowded area to the other eight kayakers I had seen and headed farther back. Several more low slot fish were released before I caught fish #10 and 11 that were solid fish. Happy to have a limit of nice fish, I turned the boat toward the truck and made my way across the marsh as a new thunderhead billowed up and began growling in the direciton of Aransas Pass or Rockport ...but it was coming my way. After 9.5 miles I got back to the truck (before the rain arrived), and got to work by lunch time to work the second half of the day in the office. Life is good!

I was working down a shoreline picking off fish when two kayaks began to approach from 400 yards. Within 300 yards the fish went silent and stopped moving because the newcomers were not using the same level of stealth (one was running an electric motor while fishing). The shallow fish don't put up with noise very well, and silence really is golden if you want to catch them. |
