my son wants to start fishing offshore in his kayak. 1st rule I told him is never go alone. He's a proficient fisherman, but hasn't gone off too much in the kayak. he has a Jackson cuda 14, and I'm jsut trying to help him get started.
since I'm generally pretty lazy, all my offshore ventures have been motor assisted vessels.. I don't have it in me to paddle 4-6 miles out.
any tips or group trip info would be appreciated. |

whoat! blast from the past! where ya been?!
one of the most important things when starting out is to not only learn, but get proficient at a deep water re-entry onto the kayak...get really good at that before you go BTB

Am I missing something, or would not Prof. Salt be a good person to start with in learning what to do and not do? |

Some folks like to fish alone, not to mention "liability" for fishing around sharks on a kayak.. Volunteering somebody else? If they want to, they'll let you know... _________________ "In your guts you know he's nuts" |

| OFT, Becky is right on the money. First skill to master is deep water re-entry. After that take the empty kayak to the surf on a moderate day and get the feel for getting in and out of the surf zone - preferably while right side up. After that, get leashes for each rod AND the paddle and work with folks on the BTB page of the TKF site. There are plenty of people who like to paddle offshore, and there will usually be someone else looking to go when your son will want to. |

| Just as I suspected, Prof. Salt has stepped up to help, being the Prof. he is, and regardless of the negative and critical internet police! |
