I usually paddle around the bayfront after work to get in a few miles and stay in shape. Lately the winds are lower and the bay is flat ...so I've been grabbing a rod or two and heading to shallow water to see if I can pick up dinner while getting my exercise. Yesterday I hit the Nueces at 3:00 and by 5:00 I had a limit of chunky reds measuring 24-27.5". There were schools still running the shorelines and the action was good, but I headed back to have dinner with the family. At the launch I met a nice guy with his wife and two kids. They had only been catching hard heads, so I gave them two of the fish. The one red I kept was enough for my family to enjoy on the grill, and I was glad to be able to share with someone else who wasn't having as much luck.

Yeah, I'm missing those myself. I went out last week and paddled a LOT of miles in search of pelagics and found none. The water looked good, but I think there is so much fresh water runoff that the fish have pushed farther offshore until the salt content comes back to normal. |
