Ive been down with Covid since last weekend, and after the fever broke Thursday I was ready to get out of the house and back on the water. I headed to the Nueces and paddled an 8 mile loop that would put me in quite a few likely spots along the way. A couple of minutes after 6:00 I saw a group of reds coming up the shoreline, and it only took one cast to get a response. The 22 inch fish went on the stringer and I kept moving, in hopes of getting to the other areas by daybreak. Things worked out, and before the sun broke the horizon I was watching gulls work over a very shallow shelf beside a drain. I made my way into 4 inches of water and began to see individual fish hunting mullet. The first fish to respond created a mess as she sent mud and water all over the flat with a LOT of splashing that spooked the other fish out. This fish measured 27 inches and was welcomed aboard. As I secured the stringer and replaced the torn DOA paddle tail, I heard splashing and sure enough, another school was working toward me. I put a new paddle tail on the hook and tossed it toward the front of the approaching wakes. This eat was equally loud and disturbing, and this time the entire flat quickly emptied of redfish. They were blowing out of every possible spot and all making a hasty retreat to deeper water. After things settled, I landed the final fish and measured it at 26 inches. Thatll do, girls. I was six miles along and as I made the loop back toward my truck I checked a few more areas with less favorable results. All my fish came aboard before 7:30 and then things went quiet. That was okay with me, and I brought the fish in to place them in the dry hatch where ice bottles were waiting. The cooling fish didnt slow the kayak down, and the rest of the paddle was relaxing and fast. It was a pretty fantastic morning!
