For almost a year now, the Flour Bluff Citizens Council has been working with the city on a proposal to turn the old railroad track trestles into a hike and bike path. This design would cut off boating access to the southern end of Oso bay and to Oso creek. We have communicated with this council since last fall that we do not want want boating access blocked. It has basically fallen on deaf ears for the most part as most of the folks on the council aren't fishermen. We have proposed to them a raised section that we have marked on a map and with gps tracks where it should be located. The city has put $500,000 of the cost on the bond for this years election, which is roughly 1/3-1/4 the true cost. There are no renderings or 3D models of this finished project, just a very simple estimated cost from a engineering firm, that does NOT include fixing holly road on either side to act as trail heads for this project. The president of the council has argued saying the oso is not a navigable waterway. A call to TPWD and the GLO both stated that it IS in fact a navigable waterway. It's also shocking that item is put on a bond that really isn't even truly fully designed or full consideration for ALL of the public to use. There is a public meeting next tuesday July 5th at 6:30pm for all stakeholders (yes, us the public) at Grace Community Church on FB drive across from jumping world. Doors open at 6pm, be there if you want your voice heard about our public water rights and how our tax dollars are spent.

are you serious? what boat are you running? are you aware that the trestles have been, and are still currently up?

YOU'RE NOT RUNNING THROUGH THERE NOW!!! NO ONE HAS BEEN OR WILL BE!!!

if you know anything about running a boat in the Oso, you're aware that there are several unimproved launches, one off the the SPID peninsula, one by the existing railroad trestles, and one by Mud Bridge....you will still be able to launch a boat and go get seriously stuck in the mud any time you please, even after the new trestles are built...

if anything, the new trestles will drastically improve access for fishing....we used to walk out and tear up the croaker and flounder during the fall run there back in the 1980's

I'm with Becky on this one. "Navigable Waters of the US" is a very broad definition, and any and all tertiary bays, side creeks, and bayous that are directly connected to a primary bay are automatically given that EPA definition, despite what reality may be.

CC Bay into Oso Bay by the Base Bridge is deeper. and used my motorized vessels; past SPID until the railroad bridge is used mainly by a few crabbers and kayakers; and past that, around the bend and towards the old Mud Bridge at Yorktown, I could count on 1 hand the number of motorized boats I've seen there in the past 30 years! Kayakers, sure, but it's few and far between compared to the Laguna area just on the other side of the Bluff. The old winter fishery at the Barney Davis outfall (primarily jonboats) all launched around the mudbridge, until the City/County put up all the bollards and froze out everybody.

Why a raised part of the hike&bike path? You gonna lower your out-riggers to pass underneath? (<---- That's obviously a joke)!!! But like Becky said, bouncing a split-tail jig along the mud walking up and down the railroad trestle was the bomb for flounder way back in the day. Plus it's like the remainder of the Oso, good for trout and reds. But it's too skinny for 99% of boats out there today.

Oso Creek???? Who pushes up that far in the mud except for a Pirogue outfitted with a GeauxDevil.

exactly....plus if someone wants to fish Oso Creek, you can pull up to it off the new 286 and launch a boat, or there's an access at yorktown and sun valley drive, or off Oso Parkway near Valley View Dr., or at the Staples street bridge on the west side, or the trails due south of Bill Witt Park.

there is another "public figure" that is raising cane about the trestles "closing off waters for commercial fishermen" as well....completely delusional...

I swear, sometimes I don't know what color the sky is in some people's world....

I emailed Ms. Thornton of FBCC the initial concerns expressed here.

She was kind enough to email me the following response.

We hope you had a great 4th, and we hope to see you tonight at the meeting.

We understand their concerns. The permits the city will have to get cover impacts to wetlands and any navigable waters issues. We are just not there yet, and we are restoring an existing structure for a new use. We will not know how high we can go until we have the loading study done and engineers do calculations.

We are hoping for several concepts to be evaluated during the initial feasibility studies to be done with the TGLO grant funds and then move into a narrower set of designs with detailed engineering and permitting issues with stakeholder input and with additional funding - whether that involves bond funds or additional grants. This is why we want everyone who has a thought or opinion about the trestle bridge (or any of the projects) to be at the meeting; that way we can have a list of design ideas and concerns that need to be addressed. And for the record, the FBCC OREC did not ask the city to put this trestle bridge on the bond; they came to us. Our goal no matter what the city does is to continue to pursue grant funding.

We hope this helps, and we hope to see you tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Community Church (1514 Flour Bluff Drive)!

Don't get Becky upset a.k.a.[ Karen ] or it will sequel to Tyler.

I have three friends that have houses on the Oso on the South end not to far from the Mud bridge. They and their kids run skiffs there when the tide are up for years with great catches especially during the fall and winter.

Leave it alone......

I guess shes never run the badlands, penescal, starvation, Corrales, etc.. They are FULL of people that are nuts also by this logic.

We live in a democracy with freedom, not a dictatorship in this country. You have the right to disagree with somebody, but you don't have the right to force your opinions on others or restrict their right to move about freely in this country on public lands and waters.

How many of yall actually showed up to the meeting? I was there. Spoke a long time with Shirley and with Greg Smith. Restricting access to boaters just to appease hikers, bird watchers, and mountain bikers, is hardly community equality. Conversations were very good and productive with both Shirley and Greg. I look forward to working with them to make it a good project for ALL.

I don't live down there, but I totally agree with your views.

It is sad that we appear to have some on this board who feel they are the experts and project an elitist persona. Sadly this type can only see their own viewpoint and recognize no room for anyone else's opinions. Unfortunately this type attitude by many is contributing to the continuing downfall of this country.

Regrettably, this board has steadily gone downhill for the last several years and I seldom bother to log in anymore when I now occasionally visit. So, if Karen wants to "report" me to Tyler, I really don't give a crap.

I would also like to suggest that the Oso railroad trestle bridge may be grandfathered if in fact marine traffic can not get past it. However, if anyone seeks to rebuild it current navigation law would have to be taken into effect in doing so. Failure to rebuild it in accordance with it being considered a navigable waterway would invite a lawsuit to correct such an error. That would be what I, as a lawyer with over 41 years experience in property law, would call a slam dunk.

Living on the upper reaches of the Guadalupe river for the last 55 years, I have seen many examples of violations of the navigable stream laws. Did you know it can be enforced by a private citizen by civil suit. I have personally been involved in several such suits. I has been a real pleasure to see rich elitists from Commiefornia, up North, and the East Coast get to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to remove dams, barriers, and other crap they thought they could put up on the river to bar access to us local hayseeds. In fact, in every case I know of, the parties alleging navigable waterway have won.

Its sometimes quite entertaining that BECKY AKA [ KAREN ] is our resident Wikipedia as well as Farmers Almanac our all issues from Laguna Shores Rd construction, to Snapper closures to now Oso bay. Don't try to correct it or you will be scorned like a school boy, or reported to Tyler.

Wow is guess my degrees from Texas A & M and South West University were not that helpful for my intelligence level.

I am glad that i hear and comprehend and appreciate others opinions and step back to ponder the other views especially when there is scientific facts or make common since. There always in someone in the room who try's to act and talk like they are smarter than everyone else. Also in a bar you will find these know it all's, who like make the others feel like they are dumb as..s.
