I use a three hook ribbonfish rig for trolling but drifting I use a 10"-12" piece of wire with one "J" hook and a cigar minnow.

A good Rapala (or similar) lipped plug is a killer for trolling too. Rolling Eyes

I have had good luck with large silver spoons and large silver rattle traps when trolling.

Suspending Silver with black back Rapala Crystal Minnow and Halco 110 are hard to beat within 3-5 miles offshore.

Silver spoons and the large rattletraps. Bring several of the latter, large kings tend to really chew them up. .

I like using a dive planer with the spoons, esp later in the day.

Cannot remember the model number, but the smaller Halcos work very well too. Prof. Salt introduced me to those.

I think kings in general have a preferred artificial bait size, I try to stay in the 4"-5" range and it seems to work better than the larger 7-8" Rapalas and the like.

I bet Becky knows about Russel Lures for Kings.

My take, fun to catch on the shady side of a ship DURING THE HEAT OF SUMMER, 9 miles out in anchorage, but i dont care for the meat to eat.

I take my 18 shallowsport out sometimes on really nice days, up to 20 miles so far.

I drag these and have done fairly well!

I prefer smaller ribbonfish and a two hook rig, just out at the standpupes SE of Packery on my Curado.. Lol Loads of fun..

Don't like the three hook as much due to many sharp things flying around trying to land one..

I release them as well cuz I only kill what I'ma eat, and that is definitely not my favorite..

Still loads of fun especially on light tackle, I don't care if they're big ones, just like the screaming drag..

Also if you run across a school of Spanish, also fun to catch near them, make sure you go around the rukus as to not spook them or they will go down and not bite...

Never caught a single King on the things. However, they were the best in the world for big Jack Crevalle, I used to clip the trebles to a single because they fouled so often.

If I could only pick one lure this is it...

Rapala X-Rap Magnum
Size: 15
Color: Hot Head (Orange and Chartreuse)
Model #: XRMAG15HH
Length: 4 3/4"
Weight: 1 1/8 oz
Dive Depth: 15'

I am sure all the colors of this lure would work but this ugly orange thing catches a bunch of fish.
