Refereed a couple playoff games this week and Friday and Saturday have to go to San Angelo for regional tournament so today was my day to play. I went out to catch and release and experiment. Started out the first 30 minutes with my typical tequila Sand eel on a jig head and caught one fish in about 30 minutes. Noticed that there's a lot of perch in the water and the bite has been very subtle lately so I've decided I needed something that just suspended or sank slowly. Put on a suspending mirrorlure and the first 10 cast I made with it I caught eight fish and all of them were between 17 and 22 in. Then I started experimenting. Went back and started throwing a sand eel again and bouncing on a bottom like I have been and picked up one or two other fish. Switched back to the mirrorlure and again bang bang fish. Then I hooked up the sand eel on a weedless weightless hook to where it sank slower and started catching a bunch of fish again. Kept switching lures around and by far the ones that I caught the most fish on were those that were suspending. Like I said the bite was very subtle and oftentimes my line would just be stiff and I never felt anything but then I set the hook and I had a nice fish on. I stopped counting after 25 keeper trout and must have caught another 15 to 20 after that. It was just crazy out there with the amount of fish I was catching. And the last fish of the day I caught was a 14-incher and that was the only non-keeper that I caught all day. Again, if those of you that are going out, the bite is very subtle. S
low down and if you think you got hit by a perch set your hook because it might not be.
What was really cool was the water was pretty clear and The lure would sink very slowly down below the surface and often times I would see the trout coming up and nailing my lure. That was a blast

Interesting Coach Zia! I read Jay Watkins site today and the two of you are experiencing similar action. In my ignorance I would attribute it to the amount of bait fish we lost in the freeze, thus the predators are more hungry then usual. There are a lot of great bar-b-que places up San Angelo's way, so enjoy! |
