TPWD appears likely to tighten trout regs in January with daily limits of 3 fish 17-23" from LLM to East Matagorda. I stopped targeting them and haven't put a trout on my stringer since the freeze, but evidently my charity with the dozen fish I released hasn't helped the trout population much, lol.

I just heard that. So we can keep the Big Sows but not the smaller male fish. Oh well, scientists know more than fishermen.

17"-23" makes zero sense.. Make it 14-19" or heck even the first 3 you catch with a max of 19". Half of the 14" trout handled by normal anglers will die anyways I would assume... oh whale back to the hardheads

Its all wrong, You are right on the throwback die off.

They would gain my ground on populations if they omitted all Trout in tournaments for a while.

I am for 5 fish daily limit , 16 " to 20 ".

Or better still, if they would establish a tagging system for game fish, like with deer, etc. for each license holder it would result in a much better controlled resource.

ban the use of croaker as bait sold at bait stands

Playing it safe I guess, two freezes in a row would destroy trout populations even more.

I could really get behind the croaker ban though.

17-23" (21.3%) & 3 bag limit (6.60%) will give a a 27% increase to spawning stock over one generation of trout. Personally, I would like to see it be 17-20" & 2 bag limit which would give a combined 52.5% increase for same time period. Figuring TPWD taking middle of road stance vs. being aggressive through 2023 spawn (which is then proposed to go back to 5 bag limit, 15-25", and one over 25").

Bottom line is we all need to police ourselves and educate others on doing what is best for the longevity of the trout fishery.......... if we ever want to see again what it was like, even just a short 10 years ago. DR

I agree with Rowsey. We have to do something. I also wish it would have been a smaller slot that did not include those 20 to 23 inch fish. However I guess this is much better than not doing anything. If everyone would remember those images of dead fish we saw back in February and just give these fish a chance to grow. They would recover. I was not around the coast for the 1996 freeze but it sounds like the fish grew really fast. But the fishing pressure was not a fraction of what it is now.
