I'm thinking about either tent cots or a truck bed tent for solo trips. It's not worth dragging the camper out just for myself. Leaning more towards the cots just based on ease of setup. I'm getting too old for the sleeping bag under a blue tarp trick and an actual bed would be nice.
Does anyone have a favorite brand? Some of the ones I see around Amazon look pretty flimsy and have legs that would be useless on the sand. |

I've been looking too, tent cots seem to be the way to go. I see the Kamprites most of the time. The last trip we set up an ez up for shade anyway so I hung mosquito netting from it over my beach lounger chair and that also worked pretty good but couldn't seem to get comfortable in the chair. I think the Coleman Walmart cot with mattress is probably about the best deal going.
Pretty good deal on this double on craigslist SA. https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/spo/d/san-antonio-tent-cot-double-oversized/7336238397.html |

| John, if you read Colin's(Towboat Trash) last post he is using a tent cot on his shark rack, so maybe he can speak to the good and bad of those. |

| I have 2 different tent cots. Kamp Rite original & The Original Tent Cot. I prefer the Kamp Rite. It is lighter & the materials appear of better quality. I find them comfortable even for my 6-3 height. Only takes a couple mins to set up. Folded up they take very little space in the bed of the truck. |

Outside of a teardrop ultra lite, tent cots are the ONLY way to go on the surf. Just make sure if there is rain you get that sleeve on there. takes 30 seconds. but you will swim in the tent cot if you miss the window of getting it on. Done the original, which is MUCH lighter, and the Cabelos. Both work excellently. But on the Cabelos, gotta watch those notches. Anyone with some experience with them will understand that comment. I have not slept in a tent on the beach in 15 years. Only tent cots. And they hold up in the wind even if they are on the ground. _________________ Fish ON! |

I use a kamp-rite tent cot. I have had no issues with it and have had it out in bad storms. No issues other then the wind may cause a slight collapse or inward push of the tent. As long as you have the rain flap on your good to go. My father likes mine and confiscated it last trip and he is crippled up to where it is hard for him to move or get in and out of most things. Only way to go as far as I am concerned. Next one I get will be a two person just for the extra room. _________________ Shane |

| Most the time I think I would be better off in a hammock with mosquito netting. The tent cots are great under cooler temps but not so good when lows are in the mid seventies. If you do it, you have to have a canopy over it to keep the dew off so that you can use the screened flaps. Otherwise you will be sleeping in a sauna. |

I've used mine in the middle of summer and never had an issue. I just leave all flaps open with the netting closed and have a good breeze in it. Only time it has gotten hot was during a rain storm and had to close the solid part. _________________ Shane |

I have the original oversized (12" longer, raised canopy) that is my personal. Ive never had an issue with dew or "baking" in it, no matter how hot. I bring two home made pallets down to seat it on the sand (they also serve for great one gallon shower/powder stations)...the extra four inches gives some more air flow, but I use them more for a place out of the sand to store things on. Again, unless your offering me something with air conditioning, on the beach, and given the choice (PINS is PINS after all), there's nothing I would sleep on or in other than the tent cot. Period. _________________ Fish ON! |

I have the Kamprite XL and its great. The only recommendation I would make is to get an inflatable mat for inside. Im a little on the larger side and need the extra cushion. _________________ -Fred- |

exactly....I have a thermarest pad, which is mostly self-inflating....works perfectly....gotta make sure not to leave those exposed to the sun when the valve is closed...

| Does the Kamp Rite XL have a bar that runs down the middle of the sleeping area? Was considering one of these for a little more room. I do not always take a sleeping pad so this would essentially make it no better than my single cot. |

no, it does not...the double size one does, however...

I have the Kamprite oversized, I'm 6'3" and heavy. Lots of room. Wish the door was taller, a little hard scrunching up to get in. Two downfall, they are bulky and take up a good bit of room packing, but it's only 6" or so thick, so it can easily stand up by back window or tailgate.
My only main issue, it's HOT inside there, even if all the windows are open and just the screen. (I like it cold to sleep) I hang a little battery fan/light in there to help move some air around. |
