Morning fellas,
Awhile back a member use to post reports of him exploring padre and was a fishing guide down PINS, anyway he posted awesome historical stories and events along with his reports and posts. Along with his reports he also mentioned a few books about the history, families, ranching, shipwrecks and the natives that occupied the island. Anyone on here know the titles of these books or how id go about finding them? Thanks ya! ><> <><

Though it has a little overlap with Corpus and Mustang, excellent detailed history of San Jose and Refugio, extremely well written, Aransas - Life of a Texas Coastal County
I bought my copy on Abebooks, and it was shipped from a Rockport used bookseller.
My first thought is search Abebooks:

There are two, Conquistadors and Cannibals - Early History of Padre Island 1519 -1845
and Secrets of Padre Island - History from 1845 to Present.

colin, aka Towboat Trash...

you can do a "Search" on this board, or Google, or Chrome, or FireFox, or Amazon, or whatever browser you're using to access this page, and a bunch of books pop up...
just FYI

Towboat Trash A.K.A Colin is the person who posted his trips up and down PINS with excerpts from books and quotes from his dealing with Billy Sandifer. As mentioned, use the Search facility on this site.

Back when I was much younger we had a coffee table book of Padre/Mustang Island. I believe the title was "A Photographic Essay of Texas Barrier Islands"

It was in print about the time the Fish Pass was created as it had quite a few photos of the construction process as well as a pics of the old swing barges on the JFK Causeway.

I first met Colin at Green Hill when he and a buddy were coming off the beach in his CJ. And then again in the green dodge. And then again in Big Red. Have watched he and his wife grow a family. He always stops by the GPs when they're up for breakfast. If you want to know about the island, there is no one outside of Billy who EARNED the knowledge of the island, at least in my lifetime. PM Colin. I'm sure he would be happy to give guidance over breakfast, or maybe a steak dinner on the island, that you cook....

Sorry for the late reply, the running and gunning around here has been pretty nonstop. Do believe these kids keep me busy. I've amassed about a library of what I think is stuff that makes my heart beat and gives reason to look at the sand as more than a fishing tournament. Finding out Billy had so many books and loved the knowledge and the research was a great moment for me. Tell me what you might be interested in, and I'll try and point you the right way. In the meanwhile, here's a link for an online writeup that has quite a bit of information in it. The park has quite a bit online, sometimes I'll go and read trash and turtle studies. I consider the folks out there to be so smart, heck, I'm just a dumb sailor-a lot of them have master's degrees or even two.

Glad to hear you're interested in the history, it won't be long and the hiking will be possible again and a person can spend all day behind the dunes again. In the meanwhile, the old ghosts of yesteryear need to know we remember and think of times past.

Laughing Laughing Colin, my children are about your age and I can recall my hunting and fishing came to an almost abrupt halt for about TEN years when they were small. Raising a family is extremely time consuming, and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon. Cool

Bruce, tell you what, I look at every dad of three or more a lot differently now. And just smile if a single guy tells me about being busy.

In those days, 3-5 kids in the house depending on the semester plus friends, we got a motorhome - and used that many weekends, most christmas vacations etc etc - it was a used one, though quite nice 34 foot, had kayak racks and carried both kayaks plus a couple surf boards. Out side of weekends, we would park this thing 2.2 miles off the pavement at pins, there were a set of high grass covered dunes that the kids loved. They were still there before the storm that took out bob hall and that storm adjusted them a bit too. But that worked out great even for the little ones - wife would come out a visit an hour or two every few days, though now she "remembers" otherwise. I had my laptop and worked - kept in contact with my office , did file transfers as needed - this was 20 years ago or so , so 100% connectivity wasnt a consideration back then. Greatest thing for the kids, every evening was chasing crabs. Just after dark, we would go out , flashlights , and catch sand crabs, they still laugh about that now, then turn them all loose and do a fire just big enough to roast marshmellows. Then we would all go inside, put JAWS on the vcr, and then cartoons. Great memories.

Colin,
Thanks for posting the link to the book. Just started reading it. I started going to PINS late in life about 15yrs ago and fell in love with it and have read some of the history about it, so this book is great. I never met Mr Bill S, but would always read his posts especially when he would go into park history and events. I love history and would read my Moms college text books when I was in 7th grade so I became a history sponge.

I mostly SUCK at fishing the surf but one day I will get better at fishing it. I operate my ham radio gear from the beach and talk all over the world from PINS. I have a trip planned for the July 18th to the 21st, and if you see a gray dodge and a 20ft antenna stuck in the sand, stop and say hello.

It would be great I think if a new section was added to the forum about PINS history, events, legends old and new, Mr Bill S.

Happy 4th of July Carlos. I would bet I've seen you, I remember telling Kathy, "Look at that, that's a ham radio antenna way down here" before. Maybe it was you. Don't sweat the fishing-the beach just beats us all up and laughs at us because it loves us...at least that's what I tell myself? Laughing

That's a wonderful idea on the history section. Have to get with "The boss" on here and see about that. Thanks for sharing, I'll be on the lookout now for ya, best fishing,

Colin
