Hopefully some of the hummers found shelter or went far enough south to survive . I feed a lot of various types birds up here in Hays county around my house . Since the freeze I am only seeing only 20% of what were here daily . Sever & sad loss all around . _________________ Fishing is not a matter of life or death it is much more important then that !

I had two older ones that wintered over for the year. When they get older sometimes they loose the gene that tells them to migrate. I always keep out fresh sugar water for the ones that do. They fed up good on Wednesday late afternoon but never made it back to the feeder the next day. It was extremely cold and I think they froze to death that night. We had 6" of ice on the ground.

texancare: Were they late departers, or early arrivers? Ours left Rockport in late December. We have a couple of buff bellies that spend the entire summer with us every year. I hope the little beggars made it. TexasJim _________________ TexasJim

The news said to put your feeders out. Due to the freeze a lot of plants didn't make it and the Hummingbirds will need it for their migration back north. Adios

No Jim the one has lived here for over a year now. I called him little bully because he ran everyone else away and there was alot of them. I new him by his crooked wing, like maybe he had been injured at one time. _________________ Danny |

Just had my first show up at our new place down here.
Ruby Throat..
Was on our Crown of Thorns flowers.
Didn't touch the feeder so cleaning it out and refilling it now.
Maybe if I'm faster next time, I'll get a pic. _________________ Steve-O

Our two regulars are mia since the freeze. As saltyhook said, I really do not think we even have 20% of our other birds back. Mostly just blackbirds and maybe a handful of doves. They should be back though, it is was the same thing after Hurricane Harvey. Just saying.......cC |

We got our first of the season yesterday here in Rockport, a black-chin. About a week ago, we were walking into Lowe's in Aransas Pass and there was a ruby-throat buzzing their flowering plants outside. TexasJim _________________ TexasJim

We had a black chin on our feeder this morning.
We had an immature rufous male that hung around until the middle of January. We put a 100 watt bulb on a timer on his feeder and he would show just before sunrise everyday. |

Just an update, the little buzzers are back. Somewhere around 6-10 showed up the past few days and are going to town on the feeders. All Blackchins.
I don't think the freeze impacted them all that much judging by all the aerial dogfighting going on in the yard at the moment. |

Most of mine have gone up North for the Summer I guess.
I do have one of these pop by occasionally, took forever to figure out what it was, he's very spooky and definetely camera shy.

Lol!
That sucker was blowing up Ebird for a couple of weeks. My wife went down to Calallen two weekends ago to get her sighting fix.
Cool that you got to enjoy it on a personal level. |
