We are still without power at the end of Laguna shores. Been out since 8:00 a.m. temperature inside the house right now is 52. Going to be a cold night. My generator died during the last hurricane and I hadn't replaced it. Wish I took the initiative to do so

I've heard that it may be Wednesday or Thursday before the Bluff starts getting power back

Thanks All,
I was "planning" on getting a portable gen for the storm season, but sure didn't plan on needing one for the winter down here!
Confused

yeah, me either....that's the problem; I'm prepared to survive pretty decently for several weeks after a hurricane, but was not prepared at all for a deep freeze...my pipes started breaking and leaking all over the place, despite dripping all the faucets...

and now there's a water boil advisory....y'all be safe out there!!

I just had a pipe break at mine. Turned off the water caught it fairly early. Also lots of dead fish laying on the bottom of the canal

Oh Boy... more fun...
I covered my outside pvc inlet to the condo and the hose bib with a moving blanket folded in 8 layers and covered it with a trash bag...
I hope that's enough!

We were very lucky in that the wife whined loudly on Monday morning Shocked so I started looking for a hotel around noon on Monday.

We are able to get one of the last rooms in a place that has power, the best western paradise inn.

There are families of like 8 staying here.

Could be worse, my son is over on Ennis Joslin, and has power, so has a house full of friends and dogs. He told me sirens were going off when we dropped off some of our freezer goods (like tuna and snapper Wink) and he said the building next his, the sprinkler system just went off in all those apartments!

Just for the record... how is this a "rolling blackout" Question

It is not a "rolling blackout", it's due to cities and power providers turning away from sustainable power and literally buying into the solar and wind generated energy. The resulting problem is they don't have batteries large enough to store the power for times like what we are experiencing. During Obama's term many of the coal burning plants were closed, thus currently there is not enough power available for demands like we are experiencing whereas in the past there was. Without very substantial storage facilities (batteries) we will never again be able to supply enough power for times like we are experiencing, including during hurricanes unless changes are made in how our power is produced. The "green new deal" is going to move us further away from sustainable power, thus it appears the only choice we may have in the near future is to plan to have power sources (generators) for each dwelling.
I expect to see our state government to get involved in this problem sooner then later, due to the number of people who have lost power and the number of deaths caused by this storm, and there is another one coming!

Be careful, politicians are looking for easy scapegoats and wind/solar is about as easy as it gets in Texas. The shortcomings have been across the board and equally bad or worse on the gas side, so don't let them blame the 10% production from renewables when the other 90% performed equally bad or worse. The big problem here was they did not plan for enough generation, and did not get serious about addressing it until they were on he verge of a collapse thus requiring big blackouts.

It will be interesting to learn the real story, but when you have to use 75% of your power source to supply to provide for a 125-50% demand, and then the components which normally provide the 75% (natural gas and coal) hit a bump the result is not going to be good. It will all probably just shake out as bad planning, especially for emergency reserves. The problems with natural gas delivery complicates ones contemplations with self generation and narrows the fuel resource alternatives. At this time at least, wind and solar (renewables) are not the answer for power during above average or extreme weather conditions.

Agreed - though for specific uses, like on a camping trailer - solar has a place. My plan is to rig a camping trailer with solar, but of course bring the propane/gas generator I have for when I have company or want to be spoiled a bit or do a full quick charge of the battery system. But to run lights or laptop , solar should do ok with decent battery storage. Heating, cooking and water heater will be propane.

Mediterranean and Waldren @ 7:18 AEP was allowed to turn it back on by ERCOT.

For what I understand by 9:00 it was off. A friend of my son up in Austin said they've been on a 1 hour on 8-hour off rotation.

Screw the windmill and solar panel explanation. Save it for idiots like Tucker and Rush (I'm sure he is watching "on fire" TV). Rush Limbaugh had a segment called AIDS Update set to music where he mocked dying gay people so I do not really want hear crap about Speaking Ill of the Dead today.

Good summary from a guy who worked in the power industry 30+ years:

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/2/16/2016337/-Messing-with-Texas-The-Lone-Star-state-s-power-grid-is-working-exactly-as-designed

rational videos:

want to trust Rick Perry?

From first article:

"Did Texas utilities pay the extra fee that coal companies want to treat the coal with antifreeze so that it comes out of train cars more readily in extreme weather? I think not..."

Some power coming on as recent as 19:00 last night in the Bluff.
