Hey guys, morning, born and raised in corpus christi, I was born on the water. Through the years I have fished just about every way imaginable here in the costal bend. I own every thing from long rods to fly rods plus a few Majeks along the way. As most I am proud and take care of my custom rods ive made, thank you roy and gut shot steve for the lessons, but as we get older time, life, and the every day grind put us in a time crunch. With so many of the old time favorites going the way of the do do bird ready built quality rods are hard to find, especially american made, texas made. A few years back I made a friend while buying my last Majek. This past year one of his dreams has become a reality. A Texas Rod company, American made. My interest in this came when he approached me and asked to evaluate this custom product which they make to your specs n desires. All their blanks are North Fork and St Croix. So i said yeah ill try it and he sent me a few. After adjustments and input I believe a high quality product has been achieved with a custom base. Not a run em thru the mill overseas construction where quality products, not spining blank, and shoot em out takes precedent over quality, action, bang for your buck. If you dont know North Fork its Gary Loomis new project after selling prevois business to overseas interest. Now i admit i got all legnths actions and have fished the crap out of these. If you want a good rod try Xotic High Performance Rods made and built in Texas by hand by fisherman for fisherman. If you want one contact Cpt jason storm in Port Isabel 956-517-4951. I know hell take care of your needs thanks for your time guys. Im not touting a friend or advertising period. I just finally found a texas rod for texas fishers made by fishers not bulk made overseas junk that breaks corrodes.have a blessed day.

Looks like you are fishing for business. You could at least be decent enough to put this in the Classifieds section. _________________

Na not fishing for business at all. Just got tired of run of mill high output companies puttin out junk for our hard earned money. Finally found something that went back to what people want quality an durability in options at a decent price. Would be nice if our old go tos of yesteryear were still in that standard and didnt sell out to china or japanese interests for that almighty dollar. _________________ Long time avid fisherman rod builder. |

Shimano now owns Loomis.
Lamiglas and St. Croix both make blanks in the US, but you also pay for that - not complaining, own more than a couple. Both also sell rods built on offshore blanks.
Crowder in Stuart, FL builds really nice rods on their own IM6 and E-glass blanks, as well as higher-mod graphite.

I have a GL2 from the 90s that you couldn't pry, etc.
Any fishing partner I loaned it to wanted to take it home. |

Tyler and I have discussed our fondness for Lami steelhead rods inshore (casting across cuts or getting away from hull slap when you're drifting) and casting lures in the surf.
It's simple ballistics, every 20% increase in rod length doubles your cast distance.
And here's that GL2 (which is, of course, Loomis IM6)

I have an older 8ft st croix i use in surf a beast wouldnt trade it for nothin been modified a tad but great rod been throwin these xotics 7ft 6 and an 8 great rods too but i had em made to what i wanted n needed. Rod all depends on what type of fishing are u doing. Why over time youll end up with different rods for diff apps. I have an old im 6 had 3 inches off tip 9 inches added to butt its my fav corkys lures all day long . _________________ Long time avid fisherman rod builder. |

In a 16' kayak, never a need to go shorter than 7', because a slot red will take you twice around the boat, but yes, shorter rods give you accuracy, and longer rods give you distance.
Something else, a long rod helps you keep weighted lures above the grass.
A favorite shot drifting Green Is. The rod you can only see part of is a Lami Classic Glass 8'2", which I fish with my old Lew's BB25SW

Tyler, I love my reel tinkering, and always have, going back to repairing mine and OP's valuable antique reels.
My latest project and my birthday present to me this month is a pair of non-level wind Ambassadeur 6500 CT tournament reels - 1995 Blue Yonder (same reel was sold as the Blue Elite in UK and Oz).
Plan to set one up for the surf, which is where most would want them.
The second, going to rebuild it in a low-profile barstock frame, shallow spool from Japan, ceramic abec-7 bearings, 4-pin brake and mag add-on. It will be a 12-lb inshore reel made to cast into tomorrow.
I'm sure I could go out and buy a better reel, but none as fun.

Bulldog and Tyler, regarding those steelhead rods pictured...they remind me of some of the inshore rods from 20 years ago with the long cork grips. Seems like these days rod makers have gone to more rod, less grip (which I tend to prefer).
Are you fans of all that cork on the butt? |
