I need some help.
It has been a great year for me but I just got skunked again.
The only times I get skunked are when the water is murky.
Topwaters, rattling, and vibrating lures do not seem to help.
If the water gets murky, I cannot buy a bite.
If I can see cleaner water and paddle over to it, I can find fish.
Even if it is not very rough, I get zero hits in dirty water.
Do the fish move out?
Go dormant?
Is there a successful technique for the Back Yard when the wind muddies up the water?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
LF

Here's my thought. I go skinny. I figure if the water is only a few inches visibility, the fish have a hard time finding the lures as well. So I shrink the amount of water I fish. Instead of 3 or 4 feet of dirty water I try to fish 2 feet or less, which usually corresponds with a shoreline of some kind. I actually like the wind in these situations and focus on moving water, between and along spoils is the first thing that comes to mind. This past weekend the water was pretty ugly and we caught trout and redfish tight to islands in just over a foot of water. You could barely make out sand pockets and grass on the bottom. I like shiny lures in this situation. Something with silver or gold flake, I feel it makes it more visible. Anyways, works for me in these conditions.

It's a little off topic but I think that there's more going on in Laguna then winds causing dirty water. I fished out there several days in a row in the past and winds are blowing 25 to 30 and the water is clear. these days you have to go almost to the intracoastal to find halfway decent water. That's not natural. Hey salt on the brain I've had the same problem last few days. Hard time getting fish to bite. Today on the way back and I stopped at my 3 minute honey hole and was using a purple gulp under of Mansfield Mauler and I wound up catching three keeper trout. That was after an hour and a half of not catching anything. Released two 18in in my canal when I got home

More than wind like brown tide? Upwellings? Do upwellings even happen in the Laguna? The surf also looks brown and ugly right now. Was on PINS this evening and couldnt see bottom in mid shin deep water.

It doesn't look like brown tide. Maybe some of our more scientific members out there can put some light on it.

it's the winds coming from all directions about every three days, coupled with the water levels dropping out of the laguna....if we can get consistent wind direction from the E/SE (doesn't matter the speed), then we will get our zonation back (i.e. dusty up east by the ICWW, gin clear in the flats, then dusty towards the shoreline, and then chocolate next to the shoreline)....

And all that erosion from the April winds and tides.
