Okay .... so I'm bored and I imagine there are others here that are as well. If you are not bored that's good and thanks for stopping by and adding to this thread.

I am an offshore guy that still likes to fish the surf/piers/jetties with some frequency. My surf fishing is normally limited to the area from the north side of the Fish Pass jetties down to Port A. I also do trips to the Sticks area. But it's been many years since I've ventured down PINS past the pavement.

If I am throwing artys I usually stand on the first bar throwing into the 2nd gut and if I am using bait I'll wade out to the first bar and either throw to the inside of the 2nd bar or just over it. Sometimes I do well other times not so much.

My question is two sided and concerns fishing the "wade gut". I have caught fish while standing on the first bar throwing back toward the beach but never actually fish the wade gut from the beach.

Two questions: Assuming the surf condition is decent, we are average height and the tide is not "to the dunes" .... at what point (mm?) do you start fishing the wade gut when heading down PINS. And ... at what point does it get too deep to wade?

My memory seems to tell me that point is somewhere between Little Shell and Big Shell but I haven't ventured down that far in 25+ years.

I expect there will be varying reasons .... lotsa bait in the wade gut, fish working the bait .... it just looked nice .... and so on. But I'd like to hear from you.

And thanks in advance. Rolling Eyes

Bobby

I usually don't go down to PINS so I can't answer those questions but what has worked for me it is on the incoming tide I fish you near side of the bar towards shore. On an outgoing tide I fish the back side of the bar. That seems to work for me.

I used to fish the beach (PINS) a lot more than I do now, but I didnt fish the wade gut til around the 20s unless I saw something that warranted a cast. In the Little Shell and Big Shell areas there are better beach structure generally than the north end. Once you get through there I just look for deeper guts closer to the beach with some kind of pinch or differing wave action indicating some of rip or structure of some kind. I feel like the further you go the better the beach structure.

One time, we were set up on a deep deep wade gut in the 40s. You could take a few steps into the water and be over waist deep. We were wading through it to cast out bigger baits from the first bar. My wife had a cast malfunction from the beach and it landed in the wade gut. She then put on a clinic of how to catch redfish from the beach without getting your feet wet. Same trip she hooked a jack and had it bit in 2 by a shark. The half piece of jack that came in was 22 inches. So you never know what's right off the shore.

Only time I have caught quality fish in the wade gut is right before sunup and immediately after. Once I need sunglasses I feel like I have to push out a little deeper, just my experience.

I will always try the wade gut. It does seem to be better farther down the beach and especially on an incoming tide.

Id pretty much go with what hickroots said. on a good high tide fish shallow early morning right against the sand where the water gets turbulent and cloudy. As the day goes on start finding some cloudy fingers that jut back into the first gut. I usually start fishing around the 17 where there starts to be some contour changes.

I agree agree with the people above. The farther down you go, there will be deeper guts and fingers and you will see them most frequently. As mentioned above, I have also had the most success fishing the wade gut in the early morning. As the day progresses, look for bird or bait activity in the wade gut.

One time down pins we had fished all morning and pulled some really nice trout out of the wade gut. It was getting to the point where the topwater bite was pretty much dead. As we were driving down the beach, we saw some birds diving in the wade gut. My dad threw a mirrolure she dog with with a 30 pound mono leader into the gut and ended up catching a kingfish that was well over 50 inches. He never stepped foot in the water.
