Photo taken April 10
Beautiful sunny day, almost 50 degrees, no wind, 90% of ice was gone.
I was sitting in my chair with a thermos of coffee.
I did disturb some prespawn trout. This was not the largest. But I did keep him out of the water long enough for a photo. I am a believer in releasing the big ones without ever lifting them from the water. They need to do their thing.
Sorry for the delay in posting.

Nice Brown. hopefully it survived. Often times when you hold with the towel you take the slime off and they have a hard time surviving.
One time I was fishing in a lake in New Mexico downwind from this one guy and he was practicing catch and release. Unfortunately he would unhook the trout using a towel and then put it back in the lake. Minutes later it would just be floating by me dead. |

| Zia-- Re-read his post. That was not the biggest. He never pulled the biggest from the water, when he released it. He did not say he released the one in the picture. Yum! |

Hi Zia
I completely agree with your comment re: using a towel to handle fish and the adverse effect of removing slime. However, this fish was very strong and most wild in his flip flop action. I could not grip him with my hands tight enough without him squirting milt. So, I used a towel for no more than ten second to keep him in a position to photograph touching only his belly.
I did release this fish and he was in excellent condition when hit hit the water. But he did flip me off as he left.
Also this is not a Brown trout but a Rainbow trout. |

Glad he was able to get back in the water with vigor. I looked at that picture again and wow surprise me that's a rainbow. The rainbows we catch in New Mexico are a lot more silver than that. Awesome fish
