I haven't fished the surf in a while, and tomorrow I have the day free. Forecast looks nice, surf seems to be settling down and clearing. Please let there be hungry pompano just itching to mangle my FishBites. Mr. Green

I'm going to try those clam FishBites that I read about here recently. I will report afterward.

Good luck! I'm betting its gonna be good.

I'm hoping its stays good we are leaving on a 60 hr tuna trip friday morning. If that blows out I'll be on the sand regardless of the weather.

I ended up spending most of the day at Bob Hall pier, hoping to get some pompano. There were a few caught while I was there, but I did not get any. The pigfish were there by the thousands. I was using the clam fishbites on a double drop pompano rig with 1/0 circle hooks, and the piggies would be hooked on my pompano rig, often two at a time, barely after the bait hit the water on every cast. I caught one whiting, one pinfish, and a jillion piggies. An old couple fishing next to me filled up an ice chest with piggies. They were big ones by piggy standards, but I would hate to be the one to clean all of those.

I put the pinfish out as live bait on another rod, and a third with cut whiting, but neither was touched. I believe the pompano are in the surf and biting, if you can find a spot without the piggie infestation. The overnighters at the pier reported fishing was slow.

It's a long trip with a lot of fishing. 10 or so hours of a boring boat ride to get out to the floaters. Then 30 + hours of non stop fishing. Then another 10 hour boat ride with the best sleep ever on the way home! Good good times with some really great friends!

Sorry to highjack your thread Chapcat, wasn't my intention.

Coming down Christmas night, hopefully I can get in a full day before a front rolls in Friday night or Saturday. Will be trying for Pompano south of Bob Hall.

That trip ought to be wrapping up (if it went off - the winds got up Saturday!!) and I'm hoping there is a favorable report to follow.

Favorable would be an understatement, fantastic would be fitting! Limit of yellowfin the first night, 45 plus 9 extra towards the crews limit for a total of 54. At daylight we headed to some rock piles for bottom fishing. The 15 of us got our limits of HUGE beeliners and a few grouper. There were also 3 big Dorado, a few kings, and a monster 100 lb cabera snapper! We made it back to the dock about 8 hours early with full fish boxes and before the weather rolled in. One of our best trips ever!
