So I see there havnt been a whole lot of reports on here. Getting a little slow. Ill throw my Labor day weekend in.
IT WAS AWESOME!
Ive been into some working birds on the 3rd and 4th bars before. I caught my first Spanish Mackerel from my kayak the end of last October. Ive been in Texas since the summer of 2012 and have not seen or experienced what I saw 2 weekends ago. We camped around 17 miles down PINS got there around noonish on Saturday. Shortly after the birds came into the wade gut and there were fish everywhere splashing all over. This was a bait trip for Sharkathon. I grabbed my cast net hopping for some large mullet or other bait to try and get some Jacks. I was super surprised when I pulled in 4 Skipjacks! And then 6 More the next throw! An older guy and his wife were fishing just up the beach from me and I say him throwing the Skipjacks back. I talked to his wife a bit and he gave me 3 more that he caught. ended up with a bucket full and headed back to load up the bait cooler. I cast net a few more and then it REALLY turned on. I stood in the middle of the wade gut surrounded by birds going crazy. The water looked like sparklers were going off with the amount of spray from the bait fish and it was like I was standing in a pot of boiling spaghetti with the Skipjacks rolling on top of the water like noodles. They were SO thick. Sunday afternoon was very similar but not quite as birds and fish probably 90% as good. I ended up running 2 Skipjack as bait on Sunday so I only brought home 38. I also caught my first 3 Jack Crevalle on lures so that was pretty cool. Also an under size Redfish was thrown back.
I was throwing a #3 chartreuse Mepps spinner. Some other people showed up and were throwing gold spoons and didnt get much. There was a kid throwing a small white and orange fly. He caught quite a few.
Also Towboat Trash put on here that there is a Vietnam vet camped around the 5mm. We stopped on our way out and talked to him a little and unloaded some fresh water we didnt use. I hope him and his dog are doing good.
Maybe someday ill learn how to post pictures on here. On another forum I joined I can post pictures from my phone. But here It seems more complicated. When my wife puts them on our Blog ill post a link to it. |
