Caught 14 crabs off my dock today resulting in a fantastic feast tonight. Ate out on the dock. Hosed down. No fuss no muss.
Added a couple of Hemperor IPA's and I was in heaven |

Do you cook em live, without cleaning? Just wondering about your cooking method compared to mine. Thanks for any Tips! _________________ Danny |

They definitely were cooked alive (don't tell PETA ) .I've eaten them both ways, but I prefer to clean them first. |

Well, that's easy enough, because I've seen days where there are plenty of mullet in the canal. Thanks for the advice! My wife is itching to put a crab trap out. We've done a lot of crabbing with a string, and a chicken neck, but never with a trap. Should be fun. |

| To answer several questions. I cook them whole and alive. I think they retain the taste better but that's my personal preference. I was using crab rings with mullet and not a crab trap. I find it more fun. Also, this morning for breakfast I had a crab omelette. Made the filling with sauteed spinach and mushrooms and the crab meat and then topped it with avocado. Yum |

Crab ring?! I had to google crab ring, because I've never used one, but probably have seen one and thought it was for something else. Do you use it with a rod & reel, pole or just a hand line? BTW, you could have just left the last two sentences off! |

Do tell on the 'cleaned before cooking method', as I've honestly only ever seen crabs go into the pot alive (that way you know they are good - sorta like 'Don't eat the straight crawfish'). |

| We pop the top shell off, pull the gills out and hit the middle with the hose before boiling. Flavor is not an issue and you can fit more in the pot. |

I can imagine that, but until I began dating my wife way too many years ago, I too had only eaten them cooked alive. My wife's family, a cajun family with an X on the end of their name, has always cleaned the crabs before boiling them or frying them to BBQ them. I've eaten them cooked alive since and prefer to clean them before cooking. The eating experience is a lot less messy when the crabs are cleaned before cooking. As far as the taste being different, I haven't noticed, I guess because there is so much seasoning in the cooking process anyway. My $.02 |
