I went on the 12 hour trip yesterday. I'll start by saying that on most of these trips there is someone who has lots of tangles, broken lines, missed fish, etc. Yesterday that guy was me. It was a tough day.

When I called to see if I wanted to go I was told that if the shrimp boats were close, they would try for Blackfin, if not, they would bottom fish for beeliners and Amberjack. Thats not what we did.

We spend the first three hours fishing for kings. Started at 9am. I do not like to fish for kings, I don't like the way they taste and theres that whole mercury thing. I catch one king and decide that I need some AC and go inside. Took an hour nap and cooled off. It was weird, we had 3-4 foot seas but no breeze and it was hot, brutal hot for my age, so I took a nap.

After the king fishing we start to try and catch some bottom fish. This is where it got a little weird for me. The back of the boat was either fishing live bait or free lineing fresh baitfish for blackfin. The rest of us were fishing squid on the bottom for beeliners. It seemed like the folks at the back were regulars or perhaps family. It rubbed me the wrong way a bit but they did not catch that much more than the rest of us. A few nice grouper and three Blackfins. I caught four beeliners and I worked hard for those four fish. I hooked up on several other nice fish but either the hook setup broke to the line broke or I got tangled.

I slept on the way back in.

Did I have a good time, no. But a lot of that is my fault. I should have asked more questions about the trip. I also had problem with my reel and like I said at the start I was that guy on this trip and for a while it was brutal hot.

Will I go again, not sure.

Seems odd though I do know sometimes there are more experienced folks on the back some of which are part time deck hands that get back there. Many times though there are so many trying to fish bait at once nobody can catch a tuna without cutting someone off or getting tangled. At times I wish they would bring ten people to the fishing side then get them a tuna, snapper or whatever then rotate. Just a thought.

Toughest Trip Ever:

Early 80's, I'm a deckhand on the Wharf Cat. 4th of July weekend, boat with a full rating of 110 people. Drifting for kings, Windward side, play out long, leeward side, shorten up. Every hook-up results in 1/2 that side tangled!!! Figure out who the fish belongs to, and get lines back in the water as soon as possible........

Now do that for 3 trips a day. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

But they made $$$, and the Tip Jar wasn't normally overflowing. Wink

And thats exactly one of 2 main reasons I will not go on a charter. Get almost as bad on some of the piers where it could be avoided IF people just had common sense and respect. But on a boat not much choice.
