I want trout, reds, or jack crevalle - i drive down the island, every few miles I see birds working, fish hitting the surface, I get out - i throw my surf lure (minnow shaped heavy lure - probably an 1.5 oz - treble hook on the end, casts a mile ), kastmasters, johnson sprites, out in the school, skip jack out the gazoo - fun yea, but not what i want. I cast out over the school, let it sink - reel it back trying to keep below the skip jacks, - just skip jacks. I switch to live mullet - free line them - same thing - lots of fun to catch , but if there are trout, or reds - where in relation to the feeding frenzy would they be and where might jacks be in that same situation.
Asking around - and I will try anything - so if you kid me, get your popcorn and watch. I will do it.
Edited to add: Has anyone seen this many turtles in the surf as now ? I used to see one a week maybe, now I see more than one every day. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

| I ran into the same scenario the past couple trips in July. This is what worked for me . I scratched out my trout limits and a couple red fish by going down current from the feeding frenzy and working my way towards the frenzy. Most of my trout were caught around dead end guts from 35-55. I would see the birds working roll up just north of the action and work my way down to the frenzy casting johnson sprites. Once I would get in the skippies thick i would work back down current from them until the skippie bite would subside and started catching eater's |
