Hi all, hope it's ok to ask this here. GF and I will be in CC next week with our two young boys, 8 and 9. I've been looking around for a half or full day of fishing but, have yet to settle on anyone. Wondered if anyone has any suggestions, particularly someone who is good with kids. We do a lot of bass fishing in the Austin area but have never really tried Salt Water.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, |

Give Capt. Alex a call 361-462-6867. They've been catching trout and reds daily out of Marker 37 in Corpus. Great friend and great guide, awesome with kids! _________________ JJ |

You haven't called me yet. To help spark that fire, One child under 12 goes for FREE. Bait and tackle included. And I have days open next week.

Howdy from a fellow Austinite!
If you have kids around that age, I'd recommend giving Jeff Wolda a call. He guides out on the Padre Island National Seashore and it's one of the most amazing and unique places in the state of Texas. We booked our first trip with him when the kids were 12 and 10 and have gone several times since. Unlike a boat trip, if the fish aren't biting there is so much to see and so many shells and things to find on the island that I know your kids will have a good time. And of course, the best truck to drive 60 miles down PINS, is somebody else's.

I have also recommended Jeff to a coworker this past March and their kids had a great time as well.

Have one booked for Sunday, thanks to all for the warm welcome and responses.
I would like some advice if I can. We are here off of Cabana St in a condo fishing in the canal off the back porch dock. Got here yesterday afternoon.
I'm a fairly experienced bass fisher but, struggling with saltwater atm. Kids are having a blast with fish bait catching piggy perch. Last night, this morning and this evening I've been throwing live shrimp and soft baits on a popping cork. Had a catfish and large perch on the live shrimp but that's been it. Any thoughts or advice.
Thanks all, really appreciate it. |

my best live bait canal and dock rig doesn't use a weighted cork.
Instead, use light or UL tackle with a 3" cigar cork (aka Mansfield Mauler), 3'-4' fluoro leader (10-12-lb), and 1/0 Kahle bend hook.
It also works on big specs drifting out of a cut with the tide and pinfish.
For canal/dock fishing, the smaller the shrimp, the better.
Click the cork about every 30 seconds.
My girls grew up with a ritual on coast trips - dinner at Capt Benny's, fish rigth after sunset at Fulton Beach pier, then ice cream.
We've also stayed at a bunch of canal houses.
We've caught nursery and schoolie trout at 40/hr with the mauler bait rig.
Of course it helps if you can cast it downwind.
Here, my daughter is using a Zebco UL-1 with a 5-1/2' Eagle Claw UL casting rod.
You don't lift with the rod, but grab the cigar cork to lift a small fish, or use net on a big fish
She grew up to using the Penn 4200SS on Falcon UL rod (hooked up)
we both finally graduated to this - 7'9" Japanese rockfish rod that will throw 5g and protect 3-lb test.
with the rod above and the lure below, I've sight-fished 22" and 23" specs in canals
A great lure to throw is 2" storm wildeye shad, or equivalent berkley pogy swim shad - blue or glow are the best night-time colors
big specs will swallow this deep and needs a shock leader of 12-lb test or better
Especially on a canal, you can walk the bulkhead holding the lure at constant depth - very effective on sly fish.
Also TTF Super Shad tandem rig - every bait shop sells this one
here's a week of dock fishing at Arroyo City last Nov - all lures, there was no bait anywhere in s. Texas

Hey BD, thanks for linking your November trip. I had forgotten how much information you shared in that post... _________________

you're welcome - depending on where you're staying, might also consider fishing one of the pay lighted piers in Flour Bluff - we've done that, too, beginning with a meal at Snoopy's,
and got into nice schoolies that were coming up the tide from King Ranch shore.
but with glow and blue lures, long casts into the dark, have also caught canal fish without lights. Going a little deeper might find redfish, and bottom-bouncing might find flounder.
Also keep your eyes and ears peeled for a big spec slashing bait.

These are the baits I've had a lot of luck with off my dock in my backyard. that bottom one is a 1in live shad to use this comparison for the size of the bait.
