Padre Island National Seashore Will Conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint on Sunday, June 02, 2019.

(Corpus Christi, Texas)- Spending sunny, hot, summer days on the beach is a favorite pastime for many families in South Texas. Families and friends gather to enjoy a day at the beach with swimming, fishing, sand castles, and even sea turtle sightings. For many people, the celebration includes alcohol, but the day can quickly go from festive to fatal when people choose to drive after drinking.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers (with blood alcohol concentrations of .08 of higher). Between 2006 and 2016 the number of deaths from drunk driving crashes averaged more than 10,000 per year. In every state, it's illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, yet across the nation in 2016, one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 50 minutes.

In an effort to increase public awareness and visitor safety, law enforcement officers at Padre Island National Seashore will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint as part of their high-visibility enforcement campaign on Sunday, June 2nd, 2019 on Park Road 22 at the north boundary. This checkpoint will support the continued detection and deterrence of alcohol and/or drug impaired driving and will contribute to a safe park experience for all visitors on this busy summer weekend.
