ok, this is getting crazy....we've been trying to register a trailer for our johnboat for a couple months now...we've been told that we have to get a court order from a judge to instruct the DMV to issue a new VIN so we can get it registered....anyone been this route?

plan B involves you all or someone you know...does anyone have an old trailer laying around that is registered in your name? I'd like to buy it from you....even if it has an old boat on it, I'll get rid of that for you for free as well....I just need the registration....

I think you just need to go in and fill out a form (130-u) and then present it to the county tax assessor. Trailer under 4K Gross do not need a VIN.

Note, this is my pre-caffeine recollection. Laughing

I was told by a wise man (when I moved here) to go to Robstown County Courthouse Annex/Extension/Office, rather than downtown. He was right.

Trailers under 7500 lbs gross weight capability do not normally have a title.

The VIN appears to be optional on a homemade trailer per:

https://txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/trailers

the above link states:

Vehicle Identification Number
Homemade trailers under 4,000 lbs. gross weight are not required to have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) unless they are going to be titled. However, we encourage you to obtain one because we place the VIN in the state motor vehicle database, which will help identify the trailer should it ever be stolen. Another advantage is you will now be able to use our online services (such as registration renewal in participating counties, or change of address notification). To acquire a VIN for your homemade trailer, you must first have the trailer inspected by an auto theft law enforcement officer. For more information on how to obtain a VIN, contact your regional service center.

I've been through this. Your plan B is the fastest and easiest way. All you need is the registration number from the other trailer and you can stencil it with a engraver on your trailer. I have a engraver your more than welcome to use.
Also get a receipt for the trailer your purchased. You need to pay a small tax on the purchase. All your doing is turning your trailer into the one you bought.

you hit the nail on the head, and that's why I'm reaching out....I'm trying to keep it simple instead of hoop-jumping, which hasn't worked...

let me know if we can help each other out, or maybe a neighbor or someone...
thanks!

not a bad idea, thanks....I'm not sure why we can't get this done, my boat partner is the one doing the running around, and I'm not sure if I'm getting all the details correct in relaying this to you...

Court order from judge is a new one to me. The rules/laws on this are confusing, as they have recently required VINs on all trailers, even though some wording says otherwise. What would be required to get a new/reissued VIN is an inspection by a LEO. These inspections are performed at the city impound on the 1st and 3rd Weds. of each month from 9 am - 11 am. Its a small fee, $15 if I recall correctly (been a few months since I did mine) for this. once they sign off, its a couple trips between TXDOT (who reissues the VIN) inside the RTA building, and the DMV at the courthouse. What you need to do if first go to TXDOT and let them know what you are doing and they will get you everything you need in order to go for the inspection. Get to the impound early for the inspection as there are generally several people in line (sever officers there each time as well). Its a little work, but not too bad, and it generally goes pretty smoothly.

This is what I remember. Also I seem to remember having to get it weighed (empty) as well. And also having to have some good pics of it. It's been about 2 years though.

to hell with that. Is this just Nueces Co BS or statewide? I have registered a lot of "homemmade" trailers without all this crap.

I agree with Rxfire, I've never heard of all of this malarky, and I've registered many a trailer.

I'm pretty comfortable this is correct. I have had a homemade trailer registered since 1971 and it does not have a VIN. Going straight to the tax accessor/collector is probably your fastest bet. He or she should be able to get it registered for you and get you a license.

If they're not required to have a vin or registration how do you get a plate for it?

I'm actually running into a similar problem. bought a boat and they have a title for the boat motor but not the trailer. They said it doesn't require one.

...but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get pulled over if there's no plate on it.

Sorry for the hijack

Travel trailers and trailers greater than 4000 lbs gross weight get a title. Over 4500 lbs and the trailer has to have brakes (not a good thing in saltwater).

They (the County tax assessor / collector) will issue a plate with the registration (without a title, as one is not required).

The state regs are explained here:

https://txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/trailers

Sounds like Nueces County may be adding some of their own regs.

You are required to have it registered (License plate). A title is not required. The seller should have given you a written bill of sale with the amount you paid for the trailer (not the entire boat) and the old registration I.E. License plate. This is all you need to transfer/renew the registration for the trailer.

I just did it with a utility trailer, had no issues. I did go to the place in Portland though. CC Courthouse make their own rules, and 10x more rude.
