Went out to the surf to see what the water conditions like and found a bunch of these on the shoreline. To me it looks like could be possible skeletons of manowar. Can someone confirm what they are?
by the way water was cleaner than what I expected but the surf was rough as you might expect with the winds. I was also there around 2:30 which was high tide and there was water going pretty close to the dunes South of Bob Hall |

They are By-the-Wind-Sailors, Velella velella. They have the same colors as a Portuguese man-of-war but are smaller and their sting is not harmful to people. There was a post on the Padre Island National Seashore Facebook page on the 27th and a follow up post on the 29th with more details.
It's too late at night for the real scientists to be on here. They will probably have more info after 0500 tomorrow. |

You're right about that!!
I was watching an amazing performance by the Blue Jackets goalie, absolutely standing on his head and denying the dreaded Bruins a tying goal in the final 5 minutes of a slugfest last night! Bobrovsky was the Man!
But the ID's are all spot-on. Normal Springtime occurrence. Pretty heavy this year, but they are good turtle food (and nesting season follows them - ain't it funny how Mother Nature worked out that timing??? ) |
