You ever get a lure bitten smooth off in the bay?
It has only happened about 4 times over the last two years, but it makes me wonder what the heck it was.
Could it be just the scissor-action jaws of a ladyfish? If so, there is no scuffing of the leader like I usually see from a ladyfish.
It there something toothy in the bay in the spring?
I have been seing something that looks like juvenile bluefish greyhounding a few times, but what is hitting my lures has to be completely engulfing them and biting off the leader above the bait. It is something fairly big.
And the hits are HARD! A substantial thump like from a big trout and then totally slack.
DOA Shrimp, Vudu Shrimp, a Mambo Mullet-brand new-first cast, and now that Little Yo Zuri Minnow.
All within 2 miles of the JFK in the ULM.
All on 10 or 20lb mono leader.
What do you think?

Yep, lizardfish and needlenose. They will hit the swirl your line makes going thru the water surface and bite you off everytime.

I used to fish off the sea wall at NAS CC and have caught several Sp. Macs who occasionally come into the bay. Big ribbon fish will hit plastics and cut mono. Puffer fish have very sharp cutting teeth, but small mouths.

I would second FB PHIL and lean towards ribbonfish. Nasty swimming mouth full of teeth.

Actually I caught a giant ribbon fish in matagorda on a fatboy. It was over 30'', interesting fish. It tried to swim backs or back up as I was getting it to hand. A buddy of mine caught a parrot fish as well.. but only after it ate a chunk out of his corky. LOL. never would have believed it if he hadn't had the picture. It can totally be bluefish this time of year and in the summer it can also be spanish mackeral.

Those big ribbonfish are dangerous.
I caught one off the seawall by the Station Street Pier in the early 90s.
I put my foot gently on its head so I could grab it right behind the head and pick it up.
This one was over 3 ft long and had an eye as big as a quarter. As I reached for it, its tail whipped me in the arm so hard that I had blood coming through the skin on my upper arm. It whipped me that hard through my shirt!
I shudder to think what would have happened if it had hit me in the eye.
