Very interesting story. The history of the island, the lower lagoon and early days of fishing - all fascinating. I have Speckled Trout to thank for that addiction!

A good friend locally has the Pico collecting bug.
I certainly fished the Pico plastic lures when I was young.

And I definitely enjoyed the history - thanks for the post.

For me, it's the reels more than the lures, and I'm a bit of an historian.
These are a couple of shelves showing my bait reels, the lower shelf are the ones that would probably interest this forum most.
I don't have any big-game reels - the collectibles tend to be very expensive - nothing larger than squidding reels.
Also some nice cane bait rods, but many more fly rods and reels.

If it interests you, here's Ron Gast's collection - probably the most extensive and diverse in the country.

Especially around Corpus, keep your eyes peeled for those big game reels, they can be worth a small fortune.
A friend found a Kovalovsky 13/0 that sold for $4000 in auction - it was being used as a dusty barn doorstop, and she paid $55.

Even some of the squidding reels, in good condition, the oldest Pfluegers with the lacquered bulldog badge like in my avatar, can be worth several hundred dollars -
- and the older, rarer models (e.g. Pflueger Avalon and Sea King) over $1000.

Texas had a bait reel manufacturer, Gulf Reel Company

Here's the national lure collecting club, which have local meets for display, discussion and swap

I'm betting Dr. McKee is an active member. Certainly his great collection and history research would be valuable at a meet.
