|
|
Found a reasonably priced 1992 majek texas skiff 16 and had a question. I already own a 25hp yamaha 2 stroke thats like brand new and wondered how yall think it would run with this motor on it. I know itd be underpowered considering most i see have 40-70hp motors but just curious if id get 20mph and be able to get it on plane without issues. |

not even close...even if you took everything off of it, including yourself...

My best friend owns one. He has a 90hp yamaha on it. I think he sees upper 30s on his mph. Theres no way you will get to 20mph with that. I had a 14.5 ft boat with a 30hp and only got 23 mph consistently. It was a different hull shape though, but it weighed less and was narrower. I would not go less than a 70hp.
On the up side he loves the performance of his. It feels like an 18ft boat honestly. And of course do not have to say it, but runs SUPER skinny. He loves his, even with the few engine issues he has had. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

get yourself a johnboat for the motor you have, or sell the motor and get the Texas Skiff and get a motor for that...

I agree. Sell the motor and get the skiff, buy a motor. You'll like it way better than a Jon boat. My buddy had a 25 on a 15ft modified v Jon boat. Him with gear saw 25mph tops on a perfectly calm day. But moving around in the boat was a pain compared to the 16ft skiff. You could fit 2 people and it was tight in the jon. The skiff can fish 3 comfortably and is way more stable. To me, the jon is a good place to start, but you'll always be wanting more. Pm me and I'll see if I can hook you up on a ride in the skiff or my boat (maybe similar ) maybe find some fish too. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

Yeah i own 2 viking profish reload kayaks right now but i am getting tired of paddling unless im going offshore, Ive owned several jon boats through the years and thats why id like to find something a lil less rugged. ive also looked into some of the 16ft pangas and the akona shadowcast that are rated for the hp i have but by the time its over with ill have 10k in something rather put that money to a boat like the texas skiff that is wider and has some more power. Thanks for the replies and input everyone. |

You can find some really reasonably priced texas skiffs if you are patient looking online. I almost bought a 95 with a 70hp yamaha from a guy in houston. It had thousands in aluminum work also. He only wanted around 8k. It was a good deal, ultimately passed on it, bought a newish shallowsport and havent looked back.

it's a night and day different between having a fiberglass skiff and a johnboat...the most noticeable is that when you run a johnboat, you're sitting down....can't see very well where you're going, or fish signs or much of anything...
when you run a skiff, you're standing up...you see so much more...completely different worlds...
