Yesterday morning Mary and I got out to the surf about 7:30. Conditions were not what I was expecting. The water was rougher and dirtier than what I expected and I thought it would be a lot of bait in the water. None of that was the case. The water wasn't rough but not as smooth as I thought it would be. Also standing in Shin deep-water casting for bait I could not see my toes. But that didn't matter because there was absolutely no bait in the water as well. Stayed only a couple hours caught a bunch of hard heads and one real nice croaker that I saved for dinner.

Today I went out in Laguna and fish for about 2 and 1/2 hours. For the first two hours I hardly got a bite and caught one 17-inch trout. Stopped at a location that I finished earlier on my way out and I switched my retrieve which seemed to be the trick. A couple times when I was at the end of my retrieve I zipped my lure through the water trying to bring it in for the next cast and I would get a hit. So not being too dumb, I decided to speed up my retrieve the whole way. In the next half hour I caught and released a limit of trout. So it seemed like the ticket today was dark colors extremely fast retrieve.

I also noticed that retrieving speed can make a difference. When I was fishing from the kayak I noticed when i was reeled right up to the boat slow I had 3-5 fish following my lure but no takers. When I reeled in fast I got a hit and then the second time an actual hook up. Things to keep in mind.... Thanks

Another thing I forgot to mention about the surf was that when the tide started coming in so did the weeds to the point where it was just a pain and couldn't keep the spider weight stuck on the bottom
