Trying to decide.
All I used for years was anything other than circle hooks.
Last year I decided to try circle hooks only ( with only 1 exception).
Now reconsidering?
Mainly about PINS for Pomps, Reds, Whiting and the like.

What say you??

First choice is a circle hook.
Runner up are octopus hooks. No solid reason or science; I just like the way they look. Wink

Depends. Circles mainly but sometimes J's on actively-fished fish finding rigs. For the wife and son, fish finding rigs with 1/0 or 2/0 J's. For standing rigs, always circles. Just a feel sometimes.

The kahle hook has been my go to for rigging plastics weedless, and for the little I've used shrimp, otherwise it's a leadhead with a screw wire.

Almost 100% Kahle hook for bait fishing.

If I've got my long poles out and I have them in rod holders I use circle hooks. If I'm fishing for Whiting to try to catch bait or whatever and holding a smaller Rod I use J Hooks in a 1/0 or 2/0 size.

I grew up on nothing but J hooks for saltwater and treble hooks for freshwater. I was never a fan of the treble and still am not (I guess it's a generational thing and partly because I stabbed myself with them more times than I caught fish with them). I still use J hooks depending on what I'm fishing for (especially if I'm trying to catch bait fish like perch), but for the big ones I believe the circle hook is the way to go. It's self-setting in most cases, so the fish don't get off nearly as much as on a J IMO (testimonial: I could never bring a ladyfish all the way in on a J hook in the past - always shook it. But I've caught several ladyfish on circles). But size selection is crucial too, to what you're after and what you're catching. If you're catching dink trout on 5/0's, you're probably tearing their lips off. Crying or Very sad

I never even heard of circle hooks until I moved down here. Everything I read was that circle hooks are the best. I have used several different sizes and kinds but I really like Daiichi 1/0 and 2/0 the best. They are super sharp and last more then a few trips to the beach without getting dull or having he barb rust off. I once caught a whiting that swallowed the hook and I was pulling very gently and the hook popped out of its stomach and hooked it in the mouth. I was very impressed to see it in action. When I was a kid my dad always rigged us up with J hooks and worms for bullheads. What makes you guys use a J hook vs a circle hook? And most of my lures have treble hooks on them except for one spoon has a J hook. But Ive never caught anything on it....

Like I said, I prefer Js for smaller/bait type fish. They seem to work better with smaller mouths. But I also like a long shank if I'm going to use a J. Short shanks you're just asking for the fish to swallow it whole. May also depend on the bait you're using. Of course they are better for plastics, but I like Js using shrimp because they seem far easier to put a whole shrimp onto.

any Hook poll should include Kahle bend - I'd bet it would win if it was there for people to recognize

Croaker hooks mostly. Bigger baits in the surf get a circle.

Red daichi number 2 circle. I even use them with finger mullet hooked from the jaw up between the eyes.
Here's what they look like in size relative to my large thumb!

...

Funniest thing in Alaska, fishing Russian River ferry landing with my buddy one day, I rigged up my sockeye snagging deep water express with a bare red Gamakatsu hook. We were right down from the fish-cleaning stand. Rainbows were impaling themselves on the bare red hook.
